fuel pressure regulator for dell's

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by aussie bay, Feb 6, 2014.

  1. type4 2 ltr, dell 40's, standard mechanical pump
apparently my running fault is due to excessive fuel pressure

what sort should i go for?
    filter king? pro flow? other?

    opinions please

  2. whats the fault?

  3. stick a couple more fuel pump gaskets below the pump and see if it cures it....you may be pleasantly surprised

  4. over fueling, CO content is 10.5% at idle and 9.2% at 2500 rpm, HC is up over 4000 ppm and it does about 12 mpg
(float heights are correct and double checked, compression is good on all 4, jets and vents etc are correct)

  5. thought about this or using a shorter rod on the pump, didnt want to risk fuel starvation on big hills etc though

  6. leaking float? sh*gged needle valve?

  7. Fit a low pressure aftermarket electric fuel pump, facet or similar. You get the added benefit of emergency fuel shut off too as soon as the power is turned off. Carbs are immediately primed as soon as the ignition is turned on too, no having to cold crank until the mechanical pump has done its stuff.

Around the same price and time needed to fit as a pressure regulator so why wouldn't you?

  8. Dells are proper fuel pressure sensitive... 3.5psi max... a stock mech fuel pump can produce 7 to 9psi IIRC

Filter king or flow pro, I've fitted both... the flow pro is probably the easier to set, as it has pre-set pressure positions on it!!

  9. or as @Joker says, use a leccy pump!! I always use the CB 3.5psi rotary unit!! Nice bit of kit

  10. So is the mech pump happy with a regulator after it? Doesnt over pressurise the pump and the pipe from the pump to the regulator?

  11. kind of what i wanted to know

dont really want to fit another fuel pump at this stage

  12. me neither but as i still need to get em set up then a single trip with the right set up would be advantageous. This isnt anything thats been pointed oiut to me with Dells before - at least not that I can recall.

    Is this always an issue?

  13. or do the gasket thing.....worth ago before throwing money on a restrictor

  14. apparently so
i know a few people that have run dells on bugs and had set up issues, nearly all sorted by fuel pressure regs or lower pressure pumps

  15. Cock! ok which one do i fit then?

  16. that was my question lol

  17. the leccy pumps available that don't cost stupid money vary depending on amps received....so anyting between 2.5 to 4.5....a mechanical set with gaskets or shaved push rod will not budge....I don't see the point of fitting an over rated pump and restricting it with another bit of kit....£80+ or £5....you decide

I've been running twin dells with a £40 facet pump and no regulator for about 4 years now. never had a problem. ( touching wood as i type ;) )

  19. the push rods are £25, the gaskets are £2.50 each and may need 5
a pressure reg is £23 but a filter king is £60

might see if i can make my own push rod....
