Fuel Gauge

  1. Yes, but I wouldn't think 5 watt would be man enough. At 7 ohms with approx 6v across it, the sender will draw an amp. 1 amp thru a 6.3v zener is 6.3 watts I need to look a circuit diagram and we need how much current the gauge draws. Certainly a 10 watt would be better.

  4. Must admit, for a fiver, that's exactly what I would have done.

A cautionary tale is...my Bug's indicator circuit was a mess when I got the car. An original part is unobtainium. So, I bought a replacement unit from a reputable supplier that was designed to be a drop replacement, all for the princely sum of £60, imagine my disappointment when it didn't come with mounting hardware, and my further annoyance on discovery it had about £1.25 worth of parts inside! The bonus is, it is a timer circuit that tolerates LED bulbs without flashing slower or faster. I kept it because it solved the problem of my rear red lenses and orange LEDs, the orange LEDs show orange thru the red lenses. But it wasn't worth £60.

  5. there are some images online (google it) of how the regulator & guage are wired at the back of the dash pod.

    Hi all
I can't get hold of a black faced fuel gauge unless i pay £135 on Ebay that is.
Ive been given a older set of clocks that im thinking of putting in (see video)
It works with the later fuel sender although i assume the needle will bounce up and down whilst driving.
My question is would the older cylinder type fit inside the tank lenth ways?
I know id have to mod the top to fit.

You could use a gauge wizard to match your sender to any working gauge.

I wrote a post on it, search Gauge Wizard.

It has a built in adjustable stabiliser too.

  8. That undamped gauge is going to drive you nuts, Ian. I’d try and find another late Bay gauge rather than hacking up the tank. There’s a used one on bus-ok.de at the mo - I’ll post a link later (out at mo). Will cost an arm and a leg, but they do exist.

Failing that, a new VDO round gauge might do the trick (and will be cheaper). You’ll likely be able to tweak the sender to get full range.
