Fuel Gauge

    Hi all still trying to sort out my fuel Gauge
    Original one came with bus was dead.
    Got one off david that one bounced about so bought a new stabilizer which burned out the gauge.
    Bought another gauge but put the old stabilizer back on, that worked but couldn't really tell what fuel i had because it was all over the place.
    So ordered another stabilizer put that on gauge went to 3/4 then straight to bellow empty and it stayed there never moved i assumed that I'd killed that one too.
    Ordered a new sender from JK
    Connected it up as in the picture as i couldn't be bothered messing with the tank as i assumed gauge was dead.
    However the gauge sprung to life but as you can see smokes like a bitch.....
    Any ideas or is this simply because its new?[​IMG][​IMG]

  2. I think your red wire from the sender should go to the
    gauge not the stabilizer.

  3. That's connected wrong, mate. From memory, your red wire from the sender should be connected to the second tag of the gauge. The black wire currently on the second tag should be connected to the tag on the stabiliser. I'm assuming it's the +12V supply.

    No wonder it's smoking.

  5. Looks better! I'm going from memory, but the black cable is the +12 supply, The red regulator cable is the stabilised voltage for the gauge. The sender's connected from the other side of the gauge down to earth through the sender rheostat.

    If the gauge was smoking, it may expire at some point...but may not.
     
  6. I think you may have let out the magic smoke, mate, but you didn't want to hear that did you? You might need another sender, I assume it's a wirewound resistor, the heat will probably have damaged it and, I am guessing here, it will more resistive.

    I read on another thead this should be 6v is that right?
    Doesn't matter what stabilizer i connect it gives out 12v and the sender smokes.[​IMG][​IMG]

  10. Is there 12V on the black wire to the stabiliser? What's the other end connected to? Hard to see. On a zener type stabiliser, the voltage on the red wire should be 5 - 6V. On a vibrator type, it should bounce up and down (hard to see on a digital meter). What's the resistance reading of the sender?

    Yes 12v on the black wire
    Also 12v on the red wire coming out the stabilizer.
    (It was the fuel sender that was smoking but theres no sign of damage or tarnishing is it simply because its new?)
    And it only smokes if i simulatea full tank.[​IMG][​IMG]

  12. If the stabiliser's giving 12V on the red wire instead of 6v-ish, the winding on the sender (which is only a wire-wound pot) is going to start getting hot. Full tank is (from memory) least resistance. Got another stabiliser you can try? Again, what are the resistance readings for the (disconnected) sender with empty tank/full tank?

  15. A big enough zener on its own would do the job of the regulator, and be a lot cheaper. You would need to know what current the sender draws to size the zener. Ah 7 ohms, so 1 amp, roughly.

  17. Is the dash connected to earth (12v-)whilst it’s out? If not you'll get the full whack of 12v through to the gauge.

  18. Like a regulator, a 6.3v zener diode will drop a fixed voltage regardless of the current flowing, providing the zener can handle the power.
