I used a gauge wizard to match the sender to an aftermarket gauge. It provides reference point mapping through the needle sweep and I plotted a revised curve to compensate for the sender arm arc, which is what the winding spacing is supposed to address, and used those revised curve figures to get the gauge a little more accurate.
It wasn’t as scientific as it sounds but it improved it.

The Wizard also provides some damping adjustment too.

Need to set up a test rig - I think I've got a spare gauge. If I use an old battery trickle charger as a 12v supply, going through a regulator and gauge, will that be OK?

  3. I'd have though that would be fine - as long as you put it through the regulator to drop the voltage. The reg should be able ot deal with anything up to 14v or more in my opinion as it will have higher voltages during running due to the alternator output..

  4. Should be, although old chargers are unpredictable as far as output voltage is concerned. I'd do it with your van battery. As above, have the regulator in place, or smoke may issue forth

Unfortunately not much free weekend time left this year. Progress will be slowing up now.
