My inline fuel filter never seems to have any fuel in it
I'd have thought it should be full ?? But it only seems to a thimble of fuel in it at tickover.
Will it fill up when the engine is at speed?
I bought a new filter from Stanford to try

  2. The most I've seen in mine is about half, usually around a quarter.

  3. That's normal. Where is your filter by the way, I hope it isn't in the engine bay. The opinion on here, which I agree with, is to move the filter under the fuel tank outlet well away from the hot engine and sparks. Lowers the risk of a fire.

  4. Ratwell dual carb fuel line info http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelHoses.html suggests a right carb filter and a left carb filter.. and that's after a pre pump filter...

Two of those are going to be in the engine bay..

  5. 3 fuel filters?

  7. If you have more than one filter of the same spec, only the first one will actually be doing anything. The others will be decoration.

    That's pointless imho.

  9. Think there's one in the fuel pump and in both the carbs too! .. and one in the tank.....

So general opinion is to keep them out of engine bay? Is it a minimise joint thing?

Yep. It's probably completely irrational but majority opinion is to put the filter where VW did.

  11. That would be just one between the tank and pump then. letting you change pipe size from 5.5mm to 7mm to fit the inlet

It is in the engine bay , I like it there as its visible , easy to change and does it make that much of a difference if it's secure and of decent quality ?
Considering that there's fuel lines, fuel pump , a carb already in there that are as likely to cause a problem?

  13. Its your van and you do what you want with it. Whatever location you decide, only 1 filter is needed between the tank outlet and pump inlet.

  14. Do you have glass or plastic? And is it filling up yet!

It's plastic, on the way to Stanford on Saturday it was running poorly , kept having the odd misfire , I pulled over to have a look , the engine was ticking over quite nicely but the filter was empty , I let it idle for 5 minutes and it hardly seemed to get any fuel in the filter .

When I went to replace the filter before leaving Stanford - the filter was half full , i didn't replace it as it was was very tight to get off and didn't want to risk not getting the new one easily so I've left it for now, the van ran sweet on the way home though..

I always assumed that the filter should be full of fuel at all times ?

The tank is new , all new fuel lines and it had a fullish tank of fuel when I noticed it empty..

I'm suspecting that possibly the fuel pump is on its way out?

  16. If its ticking over pump should be squirting something through.. its the float valves in the carbs that stop the flow so I think you maybe right on the pump but it must get enough through to keep it running unless you've got another line in somewhere!
