Fuel filter change, now not running.

hi all
I have just changed the fuel on my 1600 twin carb and now it runs for a minute or so then dies.
Then once left for five ten mins it runs again but only for a minute or so.

When I replaced fuel filter I put hose clamps on so should of got any air in.

Any advice appreciated as I am supposed to be driving to Cornwall tonight.

Not a silly question, it has been known to happen.

But the filter has a arrow and I put it facing the engine/ flow of fuel.

 

Which way did it face previously?

The old one that came off didn't have an arrow on it so not sure as I didn't look when removing.
The new filter is smaller than the old one but that shouldn't make a difference, should it.

 

Try the filter the other way round, but the little arrow is hard to see.

Yes there is fuel, that was my first thought too. There is fuel in the fuel filter bowl.

 

It is possible that you have pushed a piece of hose into the hose when you have pushed the new filter into the pipe. Is the fuel pump delivering fuel to the carbs? did you replace the fuel pipe? It only takes a tiny piece of rubber to get through and into the carb/ carbs and it will block the needle jets.

Are we talking about the filter under the tank?

 

If you used a twisting action to get it joined up, I remember someone at Techenders who had twisted the plastic inside the hose almost blocking it.

 

Hi, yes the filter under the tank.
The fuel pipes look in good condition so don't seem to be deteriorating.
What's the best way to check the pump?

The pump should be fine but you need to check that the filter is allowing fuel through first. It should just run through the filter, easily. to check fuel delivery disconnect the pipe from the carb, it should give plenty of fuel into a jam jar or such. If not enough fuel is coming through, the carbs will empty before they can refill and it will stop running. Are the carbs ICT's?

I once bought a cheap filter and it was really badly moulded and the hole in the end of the outlet was almost blocked. Have a good look at it. Have you still got the old one?

 

There is fuel in the glass fuel filter.
I will try and check carb end

 

where is your glass one? Is it a Malpassi or just one of the small cylinder ones?

 

Original was a baldwins filter, I changed for a small cylinder that's when the problem started. I've just put the original filter back but still the same. I can't get to the carb hoses as they are at the back of the engine

I don't get why anyone uses glass or those crazy plastic filters .. Fit one of those big steel canister style as fitted to modern cars . Any one will do

 

OK, have you got a length of 5.6mm fuel hose you can attach to the fuel pump? You should be able to allow the carbs to refill and then run the engine on the fuel in the bowls while you check out how much fuel the pump is delivering. Take care, it should give you a steady flow of fuel into a clear container. If it is just trickling out as you dip the throttle then you probably have a blockage in the pipe work. If it delivers plenty of fuel then the blockage will be in the carbs.

 

Just another thought, can you replace the fuel line after the filter. It is possible that you have pushed the inside of the tube into the tube with the new one. Some of the glass filters with metal ends are not that well made/finished and can slice off bits of pipe as they push in.
