Fuel Breather Hose Size

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by ssg295, Apr 19, 2018.

  1. Hi,
Does anyone know if it's 5.5mm or 7mm hose that is used to connect to the metal tubes of the fuel breather system?
    Cheers,
    Stuart

    I think it's 5.5mm if I remember correctly.
Wait for more confirmation from others though.

Good question. And where would be the best place to get it?

  5. I believe Ratwell says 7mm but this is not tight enough by itself. One of my hoses within the tank area worked loose last year and I got bad fuel smells. I had to add some hose clips to secure it, though the originals don't have clips. 5.5 mm would work better I think.

I used biofuel hose from Advanced Fluid Solutions.

  6. I have used this company for all my hoses and can approve. To get to the one behind the spare wheel well remove the rear left hand light cluster and then you can see and get your arm in there. I used fuel hose clips and think the hose was 5.5mm id.

  7. Ordered some 5.5mm bio fuel hose. How do I go about attaching the brass elbow to the top of the air filter? Its a type 4 twin carb set up with a ridged metal topped air filter on each carb. Don't want to bolt it from underneath incase it works loose I guess.. Something like this but how does it attach..[IMG]

Drill a hole, tap it and screw the fitting in? ;) The same as you’ve done for the crankcase breather in the other filter.:)

Use Loctite on the threads, or a plastic nut.

Use a plastic fitting and simply screw it in; no need for Loctite or plastic nuts.

  11. Crankase breather is vented down and out the bottom of the van by the looks of it.. Bad!?

The metal fuel breather pipes are 7mm OD. I've used 6mm fuel pipe to connect them - they're a nice tight fit but that's better than loose!
For fitting the elbow to the ridged top plate of the filter, I'd use a dremel or the like and grind a flat area in the fins so the elbow can sit nice and flush.

Bad for the engine and bad for the environment – apart from that it’s fine.

You could but there really is no need, the elbow shouldn’t fit flush there should be one or two threads showing.

  15. Why is it bad for the engine

Because contamination from blow-by and condensation will remain in the crankcase instead of being sucked out by the slight vacuum in the air-filter.

  17. My crank case breather goes to the carbon can thing that’s on my fire wall as does the fuel tank breathers.
Is that not right? It’s all OG stuff
