Front vent surround structure

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by leflipflop, Oct 6, 2019.

  1. Afternoon all.

Ive been tinkering in the front cab and the surround structure which the front vent flaps are attached to is rotted at the right angle sections where it attaches to the front skin..

Is there an off the shelf item to sort this.. or is it a matter of cutting it all out and start again?

    Any help is appreciated.

  2. Don't think there is a repair panel available for that, @davidoft may/will have a used one?

  3. I guess as long as i can get the old one off.. i could cut the rot out and replace with some angle

  4. In the past I have made repair sections with 0.9mm-1.2mm guage sheet steel cut into 20/25mm strips, folded to create a right angle & welded or spotted in.... it's not a good job but saves replacing the whole lot including front panel. If the rot goes round the corners you will need a stretcher/shrinker to form the curve.... maybe someone could recreate it for you if you don't have the tools?

  5. Fortunately for me i have access to a shrinker/stretcher plus a big ass folder in work..

    Thanks for the advice..

One more thing.. i dont have anything on the internal skin where the dash top cocer should screw to.. ?!? Lol.. what should there be..? tangs with the same slip on 'u' nuts as per the front grill?

  6. From memory there is a curved strip as part of the airbox (probably spot welded to it) there are tabs with holes in to accommodate the spire clips but I dont suppose you need tabs just a curved L strip with oversize holes in? In any event you will have to make something even just short L sections in the right spot. First job is to stop the leak or it will all just rot again!

  7. Oh hang on! thinking about it that is part of the windscreen surround...now that is a Marmite job! Windscreen out etc, I may be wrong though because now I have totally confused myself!

  8. I do wonder if the fromt panel has been replaced in the past...

Its ok as i am doing quite a deep resto within reason so screen will be coming out also at some point.

  9. There are repair sections available for the screen surround but it's a case of folding 2 L's, forming the curve & spotting them together to make a T, takes a bit of working out as you are forming the same curve in two opposites then joining them to make the curved T.

No repair panel, doesn’t look to bad from that picture, either a used air box( sold the ones I had ) or make it from sheet
