Front cross member fitting

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by ironage, Aug 16, 2011.

  1. Hi all

I fitted the front cross member yesterday and i have a quick question regarding its fit. the ends of the new cross member seem to tuck in to far where they meet the A posts this will result in there being a gap when the new front panel is offered up, is it just a case of making the ends good and welding in a blanking peice or am i missing something? thanks

    Graham

  2. that panel doen t look the best owen nw

  3. How should the ends where they meet the A posts look? there was nothing left of the originals to go by

  4. Hi Iron age ! thats looks like the totally wrong panel there mate . Looks like the one for an prototype bay ? What year is your van ? . The late bays have a 2mm thick steel inner valance that welds onto the chassis legs and then a 2mm thick steel deformation panel thats welded onto that mate . The bumper is then fiitted over the deformation panel Bulge . Sorry to bring bad news mate :(

  5. i that it was nt right but could nt put in right in me head , owen nw :-[

  6. The vans a 72 cross over so has the early front panel with low indicators

  7. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Not that far out is it? As you've fitted it, fill in the gap? These panels are shocking aren't they? :zedlol:
Assume you'll be cutting off the lip and smooth fitting early bottom panel?

  8. i had exactly the same fitting problem with mine and just ended up welding some bits in to fill the gap. the panels are just not always well made im afraid

  9. Yea, they are pretty nasty panels, I started making up end filler bits for the one I had to close that big open box section on the back.

I also found the ends wouldnt meet the front panel as the profile was wrong so I'm going to be using a late inner valance and early outer....and modify untill they fit ;D
