Fog/Spot Lamp Recommendations

  1. I'm looking to fit some fog/spot lamps to the front of the van, what does everyone recommend? I'm tempted to get some spanking new Hella 500s, something like this:

I like em....don't have any on my bus though.

  3. Yep, go for a set of Comet spots. Well worth fitting. Turn night into day.

  6. That's fine - think I got mine from them as well. The plastic-backed ones are good for Bay bumpers, which aren't that thick. Anything heavier will wobble. They're hooked into the main beam - perfect for romping across the New Forest in the dark. 5-inchers look good.

I didn't bother with fogs. Need to mount them low down, and they'll likely get damaged on a Bay. If it's foggy enough that you really need fog lights, best to get off the road!

  9. Mine are wired in to come on optionally with any headlight power. Not strictly legal but I use them to see the left edge of the road so they are pointed fairly low.

Lucas square 8. About as old as the bus. Bought by my grandfather to fit an Austin A40 never used.

  10.

Top tip (although you probably know already) - if you're drilling large-ish holes in the thin bumper (or other sheet metal), best to use a "firtree" cutter. Screwfix sell ones that work well.

What did you use to stick the vw badge on the wheel cover?
    I like it.

  12. I think I have the very same drill bit!

  13. If you have a late bumper feel underneath to see if it has holes already drilled. Mine did and all I did was turn the bumper over. Easy peasy!

  14. Are you wanting them for the look or for brighter lighting?

  15. Mainly the look. It’ll give a bit more light as an aside.

  19. Sticky back Velcro strips. Occasionally I check it as the dirt and water gradually work their way along the strips until its hanging by a thread ..

My bumper has brackets riveted to the bottom edge, but that would have been curtains for the fog lights the other day in Bristol when I grounded the pedal pan on a curb, doing a 3 point turn on a steeply cambered road on a hill. One too many dimensions of difficulty.
