I've been meaning to reinstall my missing cooling flaps, thermostat etc for some time.
Flap assembly has arrived. Can anyone tell if these are the correct parts for my van ?, i find the differing types a bit confusing. Should there be nylon washers on the link arm joints ?. Springs or c-clips ?.
    Nov 1970 van, standard 1600 tp. Thanks for any info. flaps3.jpg flaps2.jpg flaps1.jpg flaps1.jpg

  2. Looks fairly complete. The spring things hold the linkage bar on - take them off, put the bar on, then clip them on the “axles”. No nylon involved.

Ok thanks, i think maybe c-clips were fitted originally, some diagrams show them.

    Are these the one's ?. c-clip.jpg c-clip.jpg

  6. Either. The ones in your pic, or the spring type will work fine.

Ta, i was more concerned as to whether or not they are the correct type.
Some assemblies have an extra link in between the link arm and flaps don't they.

  8. Have you got the actuator rod that connects to the thermostat?

I was going to order a rod from JK.
    I presume i don't need No. 28 x 2 do i ?.
Is No. 30 an ordinary washer ?.
My link bar is No. 24. Thanks for your help

  11. You don't appear to have any No 28s :(. You need them so that the two flaps on each side work together. 30 is an ordinary washer on mine.

I think the type i've got doesn't have them, the flap bars go straight into the holes in the link bar.
I'll put up a foto of what i've got assembled

  13. Maybe you’re right. Do the flaps and linkage fit in your fan shroud?

<edit> Your connecting rod might not clear the doghouse oil cooler which I assume you’ve got. Linkage possibly from an earlier Beetle that didn’t have a doghouse.

I don't know if they fit !, i'll be getting them fitted by a vw place, that's why i have to be sure i've got the right parts, it seems it's the correct set up according to Bentley.
there's a picture of what looks like my set up saying fitted 1968 through to 1971. Is the Bentley bible that accurate?. I've got the original engine in.

I think the link bars for non dog house shrouds are flatter than the type i have, the deeper 'step' is to clear the dog house, about 1971 i think the other link brackets were introduced.

  16. Just looking at the pics, I can’t see how that straight linkage bar is going to fit around the oil cooler.

This is a pic of the earlier non dog house link bar, it has a shallower off set than the one i have that was made deeper to clear the dog house (68-71)
Then they introduced (71) the type with No.28 brackets on.
So there are three types, problem is, is mine pre or post 71. Although built in N0v 70 a lot of stuff is 1971 spec.

  18. I’ve forgotten what mine looks like, but likely the shallower bar with 28 bits.

Maybe i could offer the bar up behind the shroud.
Might be an idea to try and get a bar with 28 bits on. Are the flap boxes all the same ?.

  20. No idea, mate. Would be worth trying the bar behind the shroud if you can.
