Fitting new long heater cables

Never done this before. The old cables are free in the tubes and not seized which is a relief.
Are you supposed to lubricate the new cables before fitting?
Any other pitfalls to watch out for please?

Lubricate them and the tubes if you can .. run oil down inside before fitting the cables otherwise you will forever be fighting the friction.

Dont force the levers back or forward on the heat exchangers. Dismantling then welding up the thin tin bits and pieces inside heat exchangers and then reassembling them is a royal pain.
Springs, split pins, sliding parts with small clearances and 0.5mm tin make it truly hard.

  3. Worth giving the outers a smear of copper grease. You’ll need the nylon ferrules on the heat exchanger end.

Thanks Mike. Lube the lot where possible then! Mine is a type 4 so i think the levers you mean are on the top separate bit - forgotten what they're called. My heat exchangers are in bits as I've split the casings to renew the insulation inside. Haven't found insulation to use yet - next job!

  5. Pack them with plenty of blue asbestos

Yes I bought the little white nylon bits from Bus-OK on the last group buy - although I appear to have some black plastic bits in the engine end of the tubes that appear to do the same job and are more substantial. I'll figure it out when I come to fit them I hope, maybe I need both?

Righto - I'll just google up a supplier for that then :D

  8. Don't forget to soak it in dioxin before you put it in. It'll keep you toasty warm

I took everyone's advice and managed to get some 3 in 1 oil right through both long cables. Made a little funnel and taped it to the cable and slowly got the oil to go through it. Covered the outers in copperslip as I fed them in to the metal tube as well.
And guess what, found a use for two more of my mini bellows collection :D
