First trip!!! EEEK!

  1. So after buying Bertie just a month ago, I've got a ticket to an event in Germany on July 5th & want to drive Bertie to Dortmund & back, stopping at a few places along the way.

Well! I've never driven abroad. Hints / tips / instructions! Ha!

Any other recommendations? Bertie is a basic panel van with a rock & roll bed. What should I take to make the journey/trip enjoyable? I think after this trip I'll have an idea of what I want to change in him, internally.

  2. Drive on the right-hand side

  4. For info, the ADAC are the German equivalent of the AA. You’ll be seeing a lot of them ;)

Just take loads of spares with you for the classic problems ...keep tabs on your oil level and fan belt tension .
Take oil with you and brake fluid .

  6. If it`s a RHD panel van you`ll need a friend to spot for you at junctions , trust me , you will ...

Other than that you`ll have a ball , one way or another it`ll be memorable which is what it`s all about really ;)

    :hattip:

  7. We’ve done a few European trips in our Bay. Driving on the Continent is pretty easy so long as you have Google Maps navigating.
It’s sounds silly but it’s easy to forget about driving on the right when you’re at a T-junction or diving straight over a mini roundabout.
Leave plenty of time to get back for your return ferry. I overcooked our engine on one trip after 6 hours with my foot down rushing to make our ferry. We made it with only seconds to spare.
Be aware that some countries still observe Sunday trading restrictions. Don’t count on stocking up the beer at the hyper market on Sunday afternoon. Get plenty on Saturday.
Have a fabulous time and blog your trip to share with us please!

  8. You be fine as long as take spares, tools and breakdown cover, think of them as a type of insurance policy.

I usually have, dizzy cap, rotor arm, fan belt, rocker cover gaskets, points, condenser, spark plugs, spark plug leads and a liter of oil. If you have an electric fuel pump, worth taking a spare one of those as well.

Edit, I forgot fuses, bulbs for the lights, two warning triangles and a yellow vest.

    Best of luck!

Can you remember that Izal medicated bog roll you used to get ...maybe not depending how old you are .
It would be more pleasant on your arse to have your last month's camper mag next to the toilet .

  20. Get one of those prepayment debit cards, either mcard or visa, load it with Euros, cheaper than using a British bank card and safer than cash

PS remember to take official documents for both you and Bertie.
