Factory sunroof - fixable?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Peter_Richards, May 2, 2019.

  1. Going to see a bus tomorrow, it's fitted with a factory sunroof which is leaking.
Are these normally a world of pain to fix? It's the only thing putting me off at the moment.

Got any pictures, they should not leak even if they are knackered they don’t work that way, they could have rusted out the drains

  3. That's what I thought given the little bit of research I've done. Will know more tomorrow when I've had a look.
I guess if the drains are rusted then that's a big problem?

Depends where, quite often the rubber perishes too

Personally I wouldn't buy vehicle of any sort with a sunroof even if it is factory fitted..or whatever .
The drain holes will block at some stage. Parking on an incline isn't a remedy.
Even stuffing blue tack in the offending orifice doesn't work..as the conduit is usually rusted anyway.

  9. Front drains are quite likely

That’s on a California bus too.
Make sure all the bits are there, some stuff is nigh on impossible to get.

Its a chance to suck teeth, negotiate a good price if the water hasnt rotted out the floor too... (my devon had leaked and there was a rotten hole where the water drained out)
then fit a Westy style poptop instead.

I have a sunroof bus and its a massive pain..rust is the least ptoblem altough I spent a month just repairing the surrounding area..wished it wasnt sunroof there..but everything is repairable innit?..its only a metal at end of the day..the biggest issue are all the missing/broken parts and bits..have a look at the prices of cables..and trust me they wont last...its a bad design really..used to own few sunroof beetles before and there all fine apart from rust..that’s why Im going to put a pop top on mine..sortedgood luck anyway

  14. I love my sunroof
Parts are expensive and nearly impossible to find. Leaks can be an issue. Trimmers hate them. Maintenance is a pain.

But they do look cool and standing up making a brew on a sunny day with head out is great.

Mine fit in my garage too because there is no pop top.

  15. Went and looked at it today, seemed like a really solid bus. Drove really well!
The sunroof is a big issue for me though, if I was confident it could be fixed I'd probably buy it but I'm not convinced.
The main problem seems to be the rear of the roof isn't raising up, seller said he thinks there's a bit missing from the mechanism also.

  18. It was taped up, as you can see, and the seller didn't want to operate it as it was raining today when I was there.

  19. I was told it operates, just doesn't go up the last bit if that makes sense?

One of 2 things, either the cable ends are not operating or the lifters have rusted or broken off
