  1. I found this. i know what a front beam is, but im pretty sure the back one isnt called a back beam, but i will refer to it as that for now.... ;D

This is what i have found. the first pic is to give you an idea of the orientation and whereabouts, and the closer one highlights the problem. Its the same both sides.

Vinnie was a solid bus once, but looks like the neglect has made its mark....

my thinking was to get it on the ramps, scrape away this area until it stops scraping away, then weld a new plated curve of metal to replace this. Or is it more complicated? looks like its an MOT fail to me though at the moment.

  2. that's a very common rust spot.

i'd do what you said, scrape, anti-corrosive solution, protect, weld and protect again.

  3. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

The MOT man would fail it, though I don't believe it's structural. The cap was only partially welded when made so water gets in and the rot from the inside.
It's awkward if it's rotted at the top.

  4. I would agree with Zed, it looks like a cover cap for the weld underneath. I would do the same as you suggested.

  5. Have a look at VWbusmans resto thread, he's got some very good pics showing how to do the repair,

I think poptop did them as well (Rhubarbs resto)

  6. Just checked and its not on vwbusmans thread (wilby's long term resto) in as much detail any more (must have gone when TLB crashed)

might be worth PMing him though he's probably still got the pics

We have done them on Gusbus, you have to make some cups out of shaped steel (in halves) to replace the rotten metalwork.

  8. Great help guys as usual, my inkling was correct. Had to check though, got a right downer when i saw them both rot away like that.

    Cheers again

I'll dig some more photos out and post them up, see if they can be of use!

  10. And you can repair it at night if you spray it with glow in the dark paint like Mork ;)

  11. I got away with an advisory on last MOT but will sort it whilst I'm doing the rest of the repairs...

    Nice work there Mark :)
