Engine out to fit twin carbs.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mattlad, Jan 21, 2018.

  1. Yo.

I've just got hold of a pair of Dellorto 34frd carbs and after I've rejetted them to go on my motor I'm wondering if I can get them on without dropping the engine.

    Possible or no?

    Cheers

It'll be a he'll of a lot easier with engine out, you'll need to get the old manifold off which entails removing the alternator, air filter stand will need cutting off if it's not already etc

  4. Hmmm I see.

I will have a little looky tomorrow night and see how awkward I want to make it for myself.

Still got to put the beetle's beam back on so I'll finish that first otherwise I'll have 2 VWs in lots of pieces.

Or I'll call Flat Martin and ask if he fancies doing it.

  5. Your life will be easier if you drop the engine

Stick them in a cupboard your going to be to busy building a wall to get time to fit them
Keep the bus useable for when you’ve had enough
And need to drive something to kip in whilst you get *******ed in a field

As has already been said, it will be easier to remove the original manifolds and carburetor with the engine out.

You will have to fit the twin Delorto's AFTER the engine has gone back in. However I would advise you trial fit them before refitting the engine as the fan shroud tinware may have to be 'tickled' for them to fit correctly.

In addition I found it helped to take the lapping wheel to the inlet manifolds to give a bit more room for a 13mm spanner to fit the nuts that hold them to the heads.......alternatively there are nuts available that have an 8mm thread but an 11mm spanner fits, making fitment a darn site easier.

  9. It's only Jan and with the kiddies we won't be camping til a few months time. No wall building until 'issues' sorted!!

    However....

    Thanks -good advice.

I'm taking the view that with work, children and all the other life stuff- I'm asking flat martin to fit them as they are and I think I'd found a tuning garage that knows aircooled to set them up. The likely hood is if I do it myself they will stay in the box they were packed up in for many years. I'll slowly get the beetle back together in the micro-moments I get free to play with cars.

So the bus has a stock exhaust on it- is that going to be a big restriction with all these extra ponies that are soon to be unleashed?

  10. You will be fine with the stock exhaust

Jason at Interpro is good at setting them up.

  12. So I heard -unfortunately Jason has retired and interpro don't want any aircooled stuff cos Jason was da man.

Jesus it can’t have been that long ago he did mine. He only seemed about 20!

  14. Are you keeping heating.

  15. That's what they said- at one point they said 'he was no longer with us' with sounded a little final!!

  16. Keeping the heat exchangers- so I could have heating if I connect at all up again!

  17. 34 frd's are said to be the best carbs for a standard 1600. What linkage are you thinking of using? Pretty sure frd's don't need any modification to the fan housing. 36 drla's do. I know the great Laurie Petit used to rave about 34 frd's.

  18. I bought the whole lot off a guy I had a second hand motor previously - it has a can performance hex bar linkage and they look to be jetted for a 1600 but the tuning man can sort that as long as it drives to get to him to start with.
