Engine off can select gears, Engine running no gears!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fazer1k, Jan 15, 2015.

  1. More gear selection woes.....

Had a new gearbox fitted recently, now it looks like a clutch issue - when the engine is off I can select each gear, but when running I can't get any gear......does this mean the clutch is not releasing or something else, clutch cable problem perhaps.

    All feedback appreciated.

(I will take the van back to the workshop if necessary, just means yet another flatbed required)

    Thanks.

  2. Yes probably. You could test by turning engine off, engaging a gear, push clutch pedal right down, then get someone to push the van. You'll then know if the clutch is disengaging properly if you can't roll the van.
If it isn't, check the adjustment first before taking it all apart again, it might just need the cable tightening.

  3. I'd suggest clutch drag too, MAY just need adjusting, may be something more serious. Try the above.

  4. I had this after a new clutch cable and was purely an adjust ment on the cable .

  5. Definately clutch related

  6. Thanks guys, will take a look at the clutch cable adjustment first, hopefully that will solve the problem.....

  7. Likely clutch drag: the clutch isn't isn't disengaging the input shaft to the gearbox fully. Adjust the cable until you've got about 1/2" of free movement of the pedal.

  8. I've had a problem when the bus had been parked up for 6 weeks (In high humidity) and the clutch centre plate had apparently rusted to the splines.
    To break the rust free............
Push clutch pedal fully down, select 1st gear, THEN start the engine. Make sure there is nothing in front of you to run into!!

  9. Sorted, a few turns on the wingnut and can now select gears when the engine is running, phew!

Thanks for the help and advice everyone.

  10. You can tell if the clutch is just out of adjustment when she grinds going into reverse. Just one for future eventualities

...or if you can't select a gear when running, but can if you do first then start with your foot on clutch.

  12. This has come back to haunt me, but I now know the real problem.....please see my Avatar pic for the evidence!

So, can a new replacement clutch lever arm be installed by just removing the circlip on the end of the clutch shaft or is it more complicated than that?

Please don't say that the engine/gearbox need to be removed - done this twice already and don't want to see another flat bed truck!

I suppose the other question is why the lever arm failed in the first place, just old age and metal fatigue perhaps....

    Thanks.

  13. Also, would this be a suitable replacement (1976 2l 091)?

I can't find a source for the original lever in the UK (original part number I think is 361141719).

    Cheers
