Engine mounting bolts

  1. Hey all!
So I pulled my engine a while ago to finish some fabrication to the chassis uprights post early rear light conversion.
Got the engine back on the box but for some reason the mounting studs don't poke through the gearbox flange far enough to get a nut on! The engine is definitely correctly positioned, so it's not a case of it's not pushed in enough and it obviously fitted fine last time I put it in. I'm thinking maybe the studs have wound in too far/incorrect length? I bought a new set anyway but haven't had the weather to pull the motor again to change them. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar?

I think it's the ...That will do mentality of aftermarket manufactures .
They never get the parts to be absolutely perfect ...shape and make up . I bought 2 new a/ market engine mounting rubbers for my type 4 and they were a slightly different size creating a bit of a raunge to fit ....having said that if you bought a pair 2 weeks later they could be fine .

  3. Have you changed the bell housing?

Oddly, I had the same problem, and I can't remember what the cause was.

  4. Nope....everything went back in exactly as it came out lol! It's almost like the studs shrank 10mm while it was out

  5. Bizarre! I had exactly the same, although maybe I swapped bell housings. Can't remember. Maybe they do shrink in the rain ;)

If they are the ones made from unobtanium , they do shrink when the nuts are removed

I think the T4 engine has longer studs, certainly post 1975 is a different part, probably somebody cheated with older T1 style studs left them part wound out to get the nuts on, then you wound them back in properly as you tidied up...

For instance Megabug sells bits of M10 threaded studding as suitable for up to 1979, while the likes of VWH sell proper studs with threaded ends and 10 mm unthreaded central shafts for up to 1975.
