Engine keeps cutting out bad ECU?

  1. Hi there,

Just want to know if anyone can help me,
The issue is my 1977 2l FI

Basically it is having trouble starting and when it is running it will run very smoothly but all of a sudden cut out and wont restart

So far I have changed the plug dizzy and coil set the timing, but I am still not getting a spark some times I have also checks for loose wires.

    Could it be the ECU

Ignition switch run contact burnt or loose wire. The bus ECU has nothing directly to do with sparks.

  3. I would also check all vacume pipes for leaks/come adrift, fuel filter perhaps pressure reg faulty. Lots of info on Ratwells site.

  4. Have you checked the fuel filter? Mine used to start but then cut out after a bit.

Basically the filter was full of crud but would settle when it was parked up, it would start as petrol could flow through but then moving / fuel pumping through would stir up the crud, block the filter and then the van would cut out as it wasn’t getting any fuel.

It’s pretty easy to check, slide under the van give the filter a wipe and then turn the engine on, you should see nothing but a nice clean filter and fuel sloshing through. Mine looked like a washing machine with bits spinning about.

If it is that or the filter hasn’t been changed for ages then it’s a very quick and cheap fix either way.

  5. The same problem and cure on mine, now change it every year and carry a spare.
