WANTED Engine for a crossover 72 Bay

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Gizmo, Mar 5, 2020.

  1. Hej all

I am looking for an engine for my crossover 72 Bay.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I live in west Cheshire.

    Peace, love & unity.

What type are you looking for? Type 1 or type 4?
Do you have a gearbox and tinwear etc corresponding to what was previously in there (type 1 probably unless it’s been previously swapped around)

  3. Type 1 I think. Unknowledgeable about camper engines.

I think the gearbox is the original though. It needs new tinware according to the guy in the garage where it is currently in residence

Last major work was this, so don't think anything has been "swapped around".

    Ah okay, type 1 then.
They start off as 1600cc and usually stay that way. Some get rebuilt as larger 1641cc, or 1776cc as your Laurie Pettrie one in the receipt was, and some bigger than that.
    1600cc is usual though.
Have you not got an engine at all?
If you don’t get a response on here, rebuilt type 1 1600cc engines are quite easily sourced from all the usual suspects, Heritage, Jk, the engine shop etc but without a unit to exchange it will be a bit more costly. (And everyone will have a different experience and opinion of the vendor!!)
What’s your budget, if that’s not an impertinent question?

  5. What has happened to that engine? Can it be rebuilt

What mileage is the van now?

If you are used to 1776cc power then you may want to get the same again. A 1600cc may feel slow comparatively.

  6. @paulcalf oil leak and ceased. Don't know if it can be rebuilt, how do you tell?

I'd guess it's only done about 2k miles in the last 10 years (since that invoice).

It's had Weber ICTs on it for the last 5 years or so, but I'm not convinced they're right - smelly, hot & sounded too fast.

  7. Type 1 can go as big as 2332, but I wouldn't advise it on a bus. Why can't your existing engine get rebuilt? If you're based near to where Laurie was based there's folk in Tillicoultry that can do an engine swap and rebuild for you.

  8. @F_Pantos it's in west Cheshire. I'd happily get it rebuilt if that's a possibility

  9. Someone on here was going to get an engine done in Tillicoultry with DTH and Air Cooled Engines. Do you have the engine out?

  10. Yeah

  11. This isn't a recommendation per se, but Paul at www.aircooledengines.co.uk might be worth calling. Paul actually mentions Laurie's engines on his website.

That's a sign that a simple rolling road tune up is required, they are nice carbs when tuned & can give a really nice, smooth running motor with good driveability.

    Expect ~ £80 - £100 for a reputable tuner.

We run ICT's on our '73, after five years they are just starting to show signs they need a retune.

  13. I'd be trying to find someone to inspect it and see if it can be rebuilt.

Case may be fine and you may just need some new internals? Then you would still have a 1776cc.

  14. Laurie used to have a good reputation for building engines, up until a while before he stopped doing it.

You may get a better idea of condition if you drained the oil - are there any chunks of metal etc in the oil or strainer?

You could also take the heads off and look at the pistons & barrels etc.

Post some photos up on here and someone may be able to provide a bit more of an idea on condition.

  15. Yes you're right. Don't know anyone well respected to do this though.

  16. There's no oil in it, that is why it seized. All the oil leaked out where the filter screws in. Filter had a kind of bubble by the thread. Oil filter is in the engine bay.

  17. Hopefully someone can recommend in the Northwest to have a look at it for you.

I don't think @SundialCamperSpecialists do engines, but Duncan may be able to look at it for you and advise if it could be rebuilt. Or he may know someone in the Northwest who does this stuff.

Peter Fletcher in Bradford (not far from M62) would look at it for you and could tell you if its repairable or not. 07812 985981. He is a very experienced VW aircooled specialist, rather than an engine specialist but he knows his onions. Depending on what needs doing he may be able to sort it.

In terms of engine specialists I only know Harry Harpics in Essex. You could ship it on a pallet, get it inspected and rebuilt? Then shipped back to you for fitting. Ring Paul Miller at Harry Harpics to discuss 01702 713114.

    Hope that helps

Someone on here may know a local VW engine person closer to you.
Are you in your local Vdub club? members will know who could do this locally
