Engine bay heating?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by oscar, Jan 18, 2012.

  1. Been reading a lot of topics lately about batterys dying, from getting too cold in the recent weather. And also the effect it can have on lubricants. So I thought about some way of keeping your engine bay warm during a cold spell. I've had a look through a few catalogues at home, and can only find small workshop heaters. Would something like that be ok or is there a product on the market that is specifically designed for this sort of application?

  2. There's no point, mate. If your battery's in good shape and you give the van a run from time to time, it shouldn't suffer. Should start first turn of the key.

Aircoolers love cold weather: in the 70s, they were blasting up & down the Alps in Germany & Austria as Post Office vans, hotel transport, etc

  3. Starter motors knackered and it's stuck in my back garden at the moment. So hasn't been started for a month or so.

  4. ^^ whs^^ and with regards to oil..change to a multigrade, if you havent already. The traditional SAE 30 is like treacle in cold weather so makes the Battery / Starter work a lot harder than it needs to.

  5. Ok, so I should have done more prep work before I parked the van up for the winter. But now wondering is there anything out there for us lazy bu**ers? :)
