Empi Quick Shifter Plate - any good?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fazer1k, Feb 6, 2014.

  1. I concur, my quickshifter managed to completely hide my reverse lock out.
    This was not an improvement.

  2. A worn pin in the gear stick + wear in the slot it moves in in the front shift rod allows the stick to rotate 15 to 20 degrees hence the porridge stirring. When its in good condition the stick has very little rotational movement. New bushes etc. won't compensate for this wear...

  3. @fritt beat me to it! The shifter pin and cup can be another major cause of slop.

  4. OK thanks, something else for the check list....

  5. The pin round in section wears to two parallel slots at the point of contact between it and the shift cup. The options are to either fill the slots with weld and machine it back to a round section or make a new pin. When removing the stick for a looksee be aware that the pin is spring loaded and might just try to escape.

  6. My thoughts, exactly. I did buy one when I first got the van (and didn't realise that causes of slop lay elsewhere), but one look at the cheap pot metal and fixings convinced me not to fit it. The theory is sound - change the point of leverage a bit - but I suspect 60s and 70s EMPI kit was a bit better quality!

None the less, folk continue to sell this tat.

  7. I wouldn't say it makes a huge difference. There was a bit of a gap between driving it with the previously re-furbed shift and after @Paul Weeding fitted the quick shifter, so it's hard to say. 1st and reverse do still take a couple of goes sometimes - not finding the slot, but the final engagement sometimes needs a de-clutch.

  8. It was Coolair, because I know the pattern bushes get a bad press for being pants and Coolair do a better quality one as well as the cheap version.

Edit: Just seen Paul's link and the one I am describing above is the link between the shafts and not the nosecone bush. Not sure where that was from, probably Coolair.

  9. Cheers fritt, thanks for the info.

  10. One new unused Empi quick shift plate going cheap ;)

  11. Oi! I haven't stuck mine on eBay yet! Don't want any competition ;)...

  12. Anyone tried putting a little sleeve on the worn gear stick pin? Or am I suggesting a bodge too far...?

  13. Not really a bodge if you can do it. A better solution would be to weld the cup slot up, then re-cut it to the original size.

I would spend £4 on the hockey stick ball...
