Empi Quick Shifter Plate - any good?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by fazer1k, Feb 6, 2014.

  1. It'll work but only if all your linkages and bushes are in tip top condition, you'd be better off sorting them out 1st.

  2. ^whs I have one and it makes the shift better but I did have to fix the linkage 1st

  3. I've fitted one to mine

....but I did replace all the bushes and coupler first :D

never driven it before I changed it so I couldnt say what the difference is

but my gear change is nice :)

  4. I'm having a 3rd to 2nd shift problem do you think its bushes or shift plate or gearbox rest of gears going up and down are fine...

  5. could be the adaptor plate needs adjusting. From memory put it in second (with engine off of course!) slacken the 2 bolts holding the gear shifter to the floor, then push the plate as far to the left as it will go, then tighten bolts......might need to try a few times to get position right

or it could be bushes or coupler

  6. As above, get your bushes sorted first before fitting any new-fangled gear shift stuff.

  7. There was a thread about this on SSVC too,

They do make a great difference but it is well worth looking at the whole shift mech in one go. Otherwise your getting an improvement on a bad shift rather than improving a sorted shift, if you catch my drift?
The bushes along the shift rod are normally the first thing to wear and it makes a big difference once these have been changed, also the rear gearshift coupling between the mech and the box should be hecked, this is less likely to be causing you trouble but well worth checking.

  8. I did all my bushes first then fitted one to mine great gear change after.

Mine was all new, the whole lot - and I have a Gene Beg shifter - could still never get 2nd and reverse to both work at the same time.

Conclusion - hockey stick bush in the gearbox was shot - as new gearbox shifts perfectly and I know it was renewed in that one.

Worth checking your clutch cable hasn't stretched, especially if it's new.

  10. I did my Beetle which was dire, like stirring porridge.
New linkage bushes plus a Empi shifter and it's now got a 6" throw and is ultra positive.
It's better than my brand new car!
I'm hoping @Paul Weeding will be doing Ted's ones as he's gotta take out the engine and box anyway. :)

  11. I'll see what I can do TBR

I fitted one to @Owen Snell 's camper, so you can ask him what he thinks :)

I did also replace his gear shift coupling, and fit a new hockey stick bush kit to the gearbox, as they had got sloppy... :)

  12. Where did you get your hockey stick bush kit from, @Paul Weeding?

  13. Owen supplied it (I think) But if he didn't I would've got it from coolair or VWH

  17. You have to remove the nose cone of the gearbox to fit it... not sure how well a nylon version would work!!

  18. Thanks for all the feedback and advice, much appreciated.

All my bushes etc have recently been checked over or replaced, but still feels like stirring porridge....

Have now ordered a shifter plate, hopefully it will be a noticeable improvement

  19. If you're stirring porridge, implies that your bushes aren't in good shape. A quickshift won't fix it.
