Electronic Ignition

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Anthony Williamson, Dec 28, 2018.

  1. I want to install a new electronic ignition in to my 77 Bay. Could anyone recommend a good on to buy.

    Thank you.

  2. Pertronix 1 is fine (but pricey).

  3. The accuspark module is ok, don't buy a complete dissy though as they are pants, the rotor arm and cap that are fitted to them are also only fit for the bin

Some people have had mysterious behaviour with Pertronix Ignitor II .. the adaptive dwell is modulated by a wobbly supply on the coil.. e.g. an electric pump pulsing triggering misfires at some rpm..

The Accuspark has the same adaptive dwell feature, works well and costs half the price.

    With any electronic ignition module:
Buy two Accuspark or keep your points condenser and cable clamp piece ready for the day you connect the black wire on the module to the coil terminal with the black positive ignition feed on it.
It is often done and immediately fatal to the module as you turn on the ignition.

It's the 123 for me used my original blue coil , dialled in my engine type, then set up the timing. Really easy and starts on the button. Much smoother engine and not a flat spot anywhere. I'm a happy camper.....:)

  8. First part was me... fine once on their own circuit...

And done second part by sending some current down the tachometer feed wire to the negative post of the coil from the dash and through to the accuspark ...doh!

  9. Buy a Pertronix quality part. Don’t rate Accuspark, I tried one of their distributors & had nothing but problems. Defective advance and lack of power mainly. If you mention Accuspark to the classic car fraternity you will encounter a sharp intake of breath.

Original Accuspark used to overheat if you left the ignition on without the engine running, so the bad press, but they've fixed that a while back, they work well now.

  11. Pertronix did the same too, though even with 'normal' cars I was always advised not to leave the ignition on without the engine running anyway.

Personally I like Accuspark modules in original dizzys.

  12. I went mad after a few problems and splashed out on a 123 electronic ignition complete with new dissy, expensive but hasn't missed a beat and my van is my daily drive. Installed over a year ago. Very happy.
Supplied by vintage speed if I remember.

Had the bad ball bearing issue with my dizzy, just check that it has full movement when sucking the vacuum tube.
The claw on mine was badly worn and the ball dislodged causing shut down.
Luckily I wasn't too far from home.
Honestly a 123 is the way to go..

  14. I'd agree about the 123, but they're getting pricey, maybe too much if you just want electronic ignition ie breakers replaced by a transistor, which is a great improvement by itself.

Best bit of the 123 IMHO is the spark-balancing - rock solid idle!

Pup pup pup it is very difficult to find a waver.. You'll hear manifold leaks before it strays.

  16. When I hand my single Solex, I used to torment my 123 by turning the idle speed right down. It used to break into a sweat, trying to keep the engine running. Managed it, tho'.

  17. After frying my previous one(yes a millisecond of reverse polarity will not do it any good!) I got a Pertronix 1 from GSF for £92.40 inc after *discounts* applied.

The 'spark balancing' techy description on their website does sound impressive, only just got my head round wasted spark.
