Driving in £ondon

  1. From reading that ^ it would suggest its a health thing not a revenue thing. They appear to be worried about the state of the air.
Unless you can afford to pay and then the people can suffer, secure in the knowledge that the government is reaping the benefits of your coughing.
Surely the only option is to ban high polluting vehicles, charging doesnt stop vehicles polluting.

Hopefully the money raised will be used to improve public transport into London.

  3. Yes it’s a health thing - which I’d agree with. I think it’ll spread to other cities.
I guess the charge is a deterrent and a way to hurry people up in getting a low emission car. You’d need a few years of adjustment before slapping on a ban - all those poor b’stards who were encouraged to buy a diesel car as it was cleaner would storm parliament!
But an outright ban can’t be far away.
France pulled back on its ban on 30+ year old cars in some major city centres - I bet lots of TLBers will know more than me. Their system of stickers seems v complicated and prob expensive to administer...

I thought Historic vehicles were exempt from the existing charges.... so if we do have to pay this new charge we are getting off quite lightly...... not that I drive in that there London !

Just checked.... Historic vehicles are exempt from new charge.

  6. A few historic vehicles won't make much difference to the overall high pollution levels. London air is bad, I don't go there anymore, it stinks, its dirty, its unhealthy.

Inner city pollution is caused by vehicle exhaust gases and particles these days rather than the coal fires and industry of the past.

The new penalty charges are a good thing and will make a difference, but its only the start of a progression towards a much tougher regime in a few years time.

Hopefully the new scheme will be applied to our other major cities.

  13. Just checked Tilly we are exempt
I am sure you know but log onto Tfl ULEZ and enter your reg
It will let you know if you are exempt or not

  14. Cambridge is toying with the idea of a congestion zone and low emission zone yet when you drive around and see some vehicles belching black smoke or loads of blue oily stuff there is nowhere you can phone to report it unless it is a fleet or commercial vehicle.
Half the black sooty particulate pollution is due to poor or lack of maintenance probably a blocked or clogged air filter.
These are the vehicles that should be targeted not just putting another tax in place.
