  1. Morning All, just had the news i will be needing a new engine for my 77 Bay. Any recommendations of what to get? New ? refurbished ? size? What kind of price should i be spending ?

Look forward to hearing your advice

    Thanks in advance

  2. Subarus seem the popular choice - 6k apparently , @CandyCamper will shortly be the resident guru ;)

Would help if you said what you`ve got in at the moment and would you be confident enough to build an engine yourself ??

    :hattip:

  3. 2 liter fuel injection, and definitely would not be confident in self build!

  4. Expensive ...

If you had a 1600 it would be half the price for something decent and usually an easy fix !
2l FI are a different kettle of fish although @pkrboo will be selling his complete (good !) engine shortly , would be well worth asking him ...

    :hattip:

  5. Ok will do, what kind of price are we talking roughly ? i need to break it to the misses!

  6. Gonna start around 2k for a rebuild. 2nd hand motor about half that but depends what you buy, or need for that matter, then it needs fitting!

    Whats up with yours?

  12. Question.....how long are you going to keep your camper and how far do you travel...........
If the answer is indefinitely....... subi engines the wise choice. Better mpg more power
    and reliability.

A subi engine will open up a whole new world of travel to any where you want without worrying about the engine
Look no further then @Sick Boy he lives in Cheshire and travels to Europe all the time in his that's where the best weather is. If you travel sort distance then a Aircooled would be cheaper.

@Lord Congi made it to Portugal last year but the engine since then has had to have a rebuild

So subi = France Spain Portugal:cool:

    Aircooled = the uk :thinking:

Will be arriving I'm sure with wilf about this subject:cool:

    I've got a 1600 Aircooled and that's that
I don't what to attempt to alter because I love the sound of the engine and it's OG. I'm selling up this year anyway:cool:
Need the money for something else

  14. If you look at the adverts in Camper & Bus you will get a fair idea of what commercially available reconditioned units cost. What is wrong with yours? I paid around £2300 to have mine rebuilt but that included the bits to convert it from an 1800 to a 2056. New heads complete are circa £350 each and its generally the top end that goes on type 4s from what I understand. It would have been somewhat less if i has stayed at 1800. The price I paid was with me stripping it to a long block and delivering it and picking it up again. I did all the removal, reinstall stuff myself. Personally I like the idea of knowing what you have got so getting a rebuild from someone decent was my favoured option though folk who are good tend to be booked up so it may take a while before you are back on the road.

  15. Awwww come on .... I`ve been to Turkey in my lowly , unreliable 1600

To be fair though , if i needed to replace a T4 it`d be Subaru ..:D
