On mine (a 78) there was a trough under the accelerator for when it is "floored" so to speak as the mechanism on the back would stop it going right to the floor of there wasn't the trough to allow it! If that makes any sense at all....

 

mine has the bit on the back but it is the pedal stop, haven't seen a trough before.

Used the top bit of pipe edging to finish off the cut tub.
