I'm going to get myself a wee doggy. I've been through all the "you should rescue one" thing, but TBH I'm no dog training expert and I don't fancy risking one someone else has already fecked up behaviour-wise.

I have an idea what breed I want but I'm interested in what you dog lovers think before I reveal.

No big dogs - I like them, but not on a small boat.
No non-swimmers either, no long coats (muddy tow-path).

    Thanks. :)
    Sarah - keep quiet.

  2. Who's Sarah

  3. I only advocate rescue as I volunteer for Rochdale dog rescue... believe me they are not always fecked up....the majority are very lovely beautiful dogs...yes I won't deny we have the odd problem dog...but these are always helped as much as possible and we work hard to get them to good rescues who will work with them...

Anyway the best dogs are rescue dogs...you can get young dogs in rescue who can be molded to how you like... even pups...

Anyway... rescue rescue rescue ;) x

  4. We've got a Whippet.......short coat, quiet and calm around the house(or boat)..........
Needs a bit more room for his daily run tho............

I think rescue dogs are fine for some, I would not have one myself, i train gun dogs I prefer springers but have recently trained a cocker, around here you can get a strain of very small cocker, they are very quiet, biddable but need all carrot and no stick as they border on timid, they swim like fishes, trouble is like today I had a pack of spaniels in the back of the crewie including this cocker bitch when I took the lad to rugby training, when I got back there were a crowd of mums around the truck, I had to get her out and then had to wait half an hour while they all cuddled her!!!They take up no room, and I reckon you can get away with one without looking wrong.
I am taking in a Lab next month, will be interesting.

  8. While I advocate rescuing dogs (Sonny is a rescue) I'm not sure I would do it again... it took 6 months of hard work to train him, as he was 2 and a half when I got him... and even now he has his moments... But that's dobermanns for you!! They are very strong willed and once you get past a certain age with them, no amount of training will cure all!!

but I love him none the less :D awesome fun to play with too, even if he does pretend to try and run into you, or eat you

  9. Rescue dog. Border Collie. Sorted!

  10. I'm afraid I'm another advocate for rescue dogs. The thing is, you have to speak to the rescue charity about what you're looking for in a dog anyway, and most rescue charities I know take a lot of time and trouble to learn a lot about the dogs they have taken in, so they are able to describe the dogs as accurately as possible, and also to ensure that they find the most suitable home possible. Sounds like from your previous experience they didn't do this very well, but it's in the interests of the rescue charity to ensure that once rehomed, the dog stays rehomed, so therefore will want to get it right first time.

Websites only have limited information - you need to speak to the volunteers, particularly where a dog is being fostered rather than being kept in kennels (as is often the case because there are often too many dogs to keep in kennels) because the person fostering that dog will be able to accurately describe what that dog is like, and whether it has been "fecked up".

We've got a miniature schnauzer. Extremely loyal, great characters and company. Our vet mentioned that they're one of the few breeds that don't have any common problems (ie pugs breathing, dachshunds backs). Our flat is fairly small and he's pretty happy here. Doesn't seem to mind the van either!

Ok well you lot can rescue dogs and hats off to you. I'm not though.
My experience with rescue doggy places is they try and give you the most badly behaved dog they think you'll be able to cope with. I can understand this, fair enough. The super nice ones are easy to rehome and the pensioners get first dibs. As it should be. No problemo. Thing is no matter what I say (and I've been dozens of times looking for a dog) they look me up and down and pick out naughty ones for me.

So, can we get back on topic? - what breed do you like/think would be good for life on/off a boat and travel round with me 24/7. :)
