Hi all, i've just acquired an 034 SVDA Bosch distributor , cleaned all the crud out etc, needs a new vac advance unit which i've ordered. The thing that i'm not sure about is that the rotor arm end of the shaft moves up and down 5mm. At the drive dog end there is only a slight bit of end play, no 'run out' or shaft wobble at all.
Is the 5mm a problem or not?.

    Anyone ?

  3. Not sure about the end play, but took mine to H & H Ignition Solutions West Midlands and they completely refurbished it, very pleased with the result.

Thanks, what did they charge if you don't mind me asking and what bits did they actually change, if known ?.

  5. Before you rush off and have it fixed - is it just the upper part of the shaft that’s loose?

  6. I think it was around £80 but its fairly local to me and I dropped it off and picked it back up, not sure what they changed but it was like a new one when I got it back.

    Yes, the rotor arm end.

    Thanks, that sounds reasonable.

I would second that. All the cars I've had ,their distributors have a fair backlash and up n down play.
Having said that if money allows and peace of mind why not have it refurbished .it is after all probably over 40 years old,and much neglected part

Do you think it's usable as it is then?.

There is a spring clip under the felt pad at the top of the shaft, holds the advance mechanism down.. Probably missing.

Ok provided you havent tried to rip it apart as you might have popped the advance springs off..

I would take out the points support moving plate and the base plate carefully not losing ball bearing or little plastic mushroom slider pads (may not be there depending on design) and check the two springs on the advance mech are hooked on both ends. If they are, clean and reassemble and use it.
Gravity and light pressure from the spring pushing down on the rotor arm should hold it together. Best off would be find a spring clip.. find another seized Bosch at a swap meet..

  12. Probably best to fix it. As Mike says, there should be a spring clip under the felt lube pad. If you remove it (if it's there), should be able to take the upper part of the shaft off. Guessing, but the clip may have gone or there may be fibre spacer washers under the shaft that have worn. @Bigherb will know what's under there. I wouldn't chuck an original dissy out if it can be fixed.

Your right !, the spring clip had come off !, fitted one off spare dizzy, bob weights and springs appear to be in good condition, when the new vac advance unit turns up i'll pop it on the van. Thanks all
