Dilemma

On Monday evening I had two Amazon parcels delivered.
I was in, the lights were all on, both cars were on the drive. Both parcels were left outside on the doorstep. One of them was ordered by a friend and she sent me a text 20 mins later saying it had been delivered. So that’s when I found them outside when I went to look.
Also the porch door hadn’t been closed properly.

I thought this was strange since the door bell hadn’t been rung nor did anyone knock either on the front or side doors as they often do before leaving in the unlocked porch.

Wednesday night and I’m looking for my favourite big coat. I can’t find it anywhere, along with another nice coat, both North Face. I’ve searched everywhere for hours.

I have a lot of things delivered which, if a signature isn’t required and sometimes even if one is required 90% or more get left in the porch.

I can’t be certain of anything here and I live at the end of a private drive in a village so no-one passes my house and only the postman or anyone delivering stuff comes by.
I never lock my porch when I’m in or when I know a delivery is coming. Most times they don’t close the door properly as you need to lift the handle after closing, so it sometimes opens ajar a fraction.

So I check with my friend and her amazon notification shows a photo of both the parcels on the doorstep. My notification says mine was ‘handed to the resident’. Same delivery.

    What do I do!?

I’m thinking I might query my delivery just to see what they say.

    Any thoughts?

I would query it @Gingerbus you never know other people in that drivers route may have had similar problems.

Read three times. And I think you are saying that your coats have been possibly stolen? Or are you saying the delivery man should have knocked to let you know parcel s have arrived ...or have the parcels been stolen . ?

    I’ve got the parcels.
I thought at the time it was suspicious as Amazon never leave them outside, they usually knock on the front and side door and if no answer then put them in the porch.
No one knocked and I was obviously in. My neighbours were in. My door was ajar.
    Same delivery same time.
One parcel says handed to me, the other my friend had a photo sent of them outside my porch.
And two coats have gone missing from the porch but I didn’t notice until two days later.

I’m going to ask them about my delivery to see what they say.

  5. Amazon have saved a lot of money by ditching proper courier deliveries. Instead, they are delivered round here by all sorts of ordinary people in ordinary cars. It's part of the gig economy these days - I'm sure most people doing it are earning an honest crust but it strikes me that the system is open to abuse.

  6. Because I seem to find I trust people less and less these days, I’m seriously considering fitting a nest hello door bell. I know it’s a lot of money for a door bell, but at least it automatically starts recording as soon as someone walks up the drive, and saves it to the cloud.

  7. We live at the end of our close, my office overlooks the drive and whilst working at my desk I see any delivery driver come down our drive and usually I am at the front door before they have chance to knock. Amazon have in my mind always had some poor drivers, we have had boxes turn up open which I have refused to accept in case the contents aren't complete and more recently than not the driver has signed his little pad to say left on the doorstep etc, which I believe means they never had any intention of knocking the door even though clearly people were in (lights on cars on drive). Amazon drivers aren't the only ones who do this. DPD, FEDEX and UPS are the only ones that now seem to knock.

You'll be hard pushed to prove your coats were stolen.

Go and take a look at Techmoan's review of a wireless video/audio doorbell on Youtube.

Problem : if these things use WiFi it takes a few seconds to wake up , connect to your network and only then virtually ring the door bell.

Then it will ring when you arent in the house and when you answer the door through the speaker the person outiside is not generally pleased or cant understand that despite answering the door bell you will most definitely not be opening the door.
And telling them you arent acually in can be quite helpful for some..

In the USA similar products are loved by the police precisely because the recordings are in the cloud... they can borrow the data to take a look , check that you , the houseowner did indeed walk up the driveway wearing a stripey teashirt and carrying a sack, half an hour after the local teashop was done over and all the scones were stolen. .

    Double edged sword.

  9. Just answer the door in a pair of old Y-Fronts, smoking a pipe. That should discourage any callers.

We had an issue with a parcel left on the doorstep and I’ve since fitted a rechargeable video camera outside our front door. It’s been really useful - WiFi connection works pretty well. I was put off the doorbells by a lot of reviews about time-lag.

I opened a case with their logistics people.
It’s the only way I can get it looked into.
I’m not really happy that I have to make an allegation rather than raise a query about the delivery notice discrepancy because I don’t want someone to get into trouble if it can be resolved another way, but it’s that or do nothing, or get the police involved and I have no evidence.

I now wish I’d done nothing as I feel guilty about potentially getting someone in trouble, but at the end of the day I can’t see another option. I guess my insurance would require me to report it if I try to claim.
Amazon took it seriously and after 3 calls, one to India, one to Ohio and the last one from Ireland I think they understood my position, and I said if they turned up in the post I’d withdraw any complaint and say I had them.

As an outsider I would agree that the only uninvited person who has been to your home within the timeframe of the 2 coats going missing is the courier. The fact you live in a quiet village and at the end of a private lane you should be able to leave your porch door unlocked when at home. Like most people I would come to the conclusion that the courier has taken a liking to the 2 coats knowing they have a resale value so has left the parcels without notifying you they had arrived so as to leave with said coats without your knowledge.

    ‘However knowing how things work the way it will work out could go one of 3 ways;

As your porch door was not locked your insurance may decline to pay your claim as most insurance companies will try to weasel out of paying a claim if possible.

As your porch door is not locked, there is no CCTV and no neighbours overlook the area and no one witnessed the alleged crime and it could possibly have occurred at any time over a 48hr period, the Civilian member of Police staff will (over the phone) create a crime report and file it undetected as there are no further lines of enquiry with a realistic prospect of a conviction.

The Suspect/courier will return the coats at a time you are not at home firstly safe in the knowledge that you won’t have possibly installed CCTV that may incriminate them and secondly that should the coats reappear after you have contacted his employer (making the suggestion you won’t pursue the matter if they are returned) that their employer won’t phone you up asking if the coats had been found/returned as no employer would then view their employee with suspicion under such circumstances.

The time may have come to buy a CCTV system so as to prevent further issues. Put a latch on the porch door. Accept the coats have gone, get a crime number, claim on your insurance. Go buy a new coat and have several drinks whilst out to forget your troubles and wobble home in a nice new warm coat.

@Jules65 The porch has a lock so I’ll be using that in future when out. No more ‘leave in my porch’ delivery for me.

And I will have a camera to put up fairly soon, and a new coat.

I agree and suspect my insurance will say that I should have locked the door, which I know, although realistically I still wouldn’t lock it until going to bed as usual.

I’ve been very fortunate thus far. While my house is well hidden and not approachable by anyone in passing (and has security lights) I know that also means it’s vulnerable when neighbours are not around to see what’s going on outside, and my door is not visible from their house anyway.

As there’s always Bazza, he used to be in the security business

    Thanks for the opinions.

I forgot to mention that Baz.
Any delivery guy who manages to get up all the pee-stinking hypodermic needle strewn stairs without being stabbed probably feels he is due some kind of reward.
