Dellorto no go

  1. Hi everyone,
The DRLA here has a seized spindle, what is the path of least destruction to make it useable again please?? I'd rather not buy a new spindle (cheap they aren't) and new ones are not the same as the genuine originals..... thanks!
PS I may need jet settings for 2.0 cu, or maybe not.....

lubricate the bearings? If that's even possible.

    55-58 idle,
    mains dependent on venturi,
    180 airs,
    9164.2 emulsions

The bearings are available cheaply via eBay if they don't free off.

  4. If it's anything like a Weber and if you need to remove the spindle, then the screws holding the butterflies in place are put in then peened over at the back to prevent the screws coming undone and falling into the engine.

You need to file the back of each screw down before you can remove them, then throw the screws away and buy new ones, put the new ones in and then peen them over again.

Soak it in a little bath of clean oil, just enough to cover the spindle, I have some spare shaft bearings if needed

I must admit to using an impact driver very gently with a small hammer to crack those screws undone on my progressive. So as not to bend the shaft.

Soak it, gently poke the butterflies to try and get it to move. ..take all the fittings off the shaft in case its something outside that has siezed.

  7. Thanks zedders and everyone.
Soaked it in diesel for 3 weeks. Got butterfly's to move couple of mm. Some butchery followed...
Both ends of shaft sheared off. Shaft twisted like toffee.
One main jet stuck in, could do with that 135 out. Got 32mm vents out to go into hopefully more useable carb (IE not out a canal or ditch).
I think I will have to invest in jet tools, sounds expensive, also have no experience using them-properly...
So the pumps at 33, mains at 122, idle 45(?) are too small.....or 135 too big if can dig it out??

  8. After much digging through old posts on the 36's I've just bolted on ( not started yet..) 33 pump, 135 mains, 55 idles 180 tall airs and the .2 emulsions with 30 vents

Hopefully find how it runs soon

  9. Thanks deefers66. I wrote that down in case there's a future electric blackout!
Are there differences in 36drla (apart from jets and choke sizes)?
One carb was seized so I substituted another. I noticed in the dell book under pump output 'potata pompa' one is #8 , another #6.
What do I change to make them match, can I change the pump output just by screwing in /out the arm? Or are there things/drillings that can't ??

Pump jets can be changed and the length of the squirt adjusted with the tiny nuts on the accelerator pump linkage.
    Are yours 36 or 40's?
Seems like the only pump jets on sale are for DHLA carbs. They are a few mm shorter so the squirt hits the venturi.

  11. As a inexperienced new to dells spanner monkey I am seeing unusual faults from wear and previous owners. Maybe useful to others..
The main venturi which I thought can't go wrong, can. The 30 chokes have room behind. On an OK carb this had the equivalent of half a tube of dried autosol behind it. Until out in sunlight the pinhole corrosion was not visible. On a 32mm the inner and outer part of the vent had changed shape, corrosion got between the steel and alloy in the tube. So expect everything -assume nothing....
The chewed up screws are normal.
I've looked a lot and there are the best dell threads here. But no detailed A-Z yet in one place!

  12. Hi zedders, they are 36drla (alfasud/33/arna).
The pump output must be different, between sets so I will have to test it (#6 to#8 whatever difference that means) by filling them and gathering the output fuel. If can be done accurately...
Also in the dell book, delorto factory list near the back, pump 33 has three stripes underneath. What is that for ? ? (......not adidas at all)!
I suppose I could use callipers on left and right carbs pump rods and compare.
I don't know about the jets in your pic, or how to jet drill those to the 40-50 needed for vw. It looks too fine to be messed with. Nor do I have Weber IDF jets to see if the same.

They all seem to be 33 and we know that won't do.

  13. Dunno if it helps but Dellorto also make bike carbs , very popular with the scooter fraternity I believe ??
Might be worth asking the question at a local scoot shoppe ...

  14. Just put a set of Alfasud 36's on. I saw the dellorto handbook says 50 but only seen 33's listed by people on their set ups accross a few forums, so i left them..got me wondering now..

  15. Thanks LASTY.
Good idea, did think of that (know of good bike shop, closed atm). When dellorto search done in fleabay tons of cheap jets for scooters pop up. Seem like they have no problem with parts (seems like quite a few vw fans are scooter fans too). If that shop can drill the jets or supply new they can have the money, buy from decent people you like I say....but might not be interested after they ask "what's it for"?

  16. You can but ask - wouldn't think it'd be problem telling em it's for an old vw ...

You don't need big pump jets, I'm pretty sure mine are 35-ish, it's 2.4l and it doesn't stumble.
