Cylinder 3 sticking

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dookie, Oct 25, 2019.

  1. Just been out for a drive and noticed that cylinder 3 is not firing. I'm not great at fixing these sort of things I normally just make it worse. But is it an easy fix or is a professional job?

    Cheers

  2. A bit more about your set up would help ..engine size, single / twin carb, all stock?..
If you've got 3 others firing chances are leads are loose.. ours used to rattle off after a while, give them all a push back on. Check distributor cap is clean and contacts or rotor arm not burnt at all. All easy checks before going to a garage

  3. The engine is a stock 1600cc engine. However it has been converted to LPG which burns hot. But I will check leads when it stops raining

  4. That’s your problem right there

  5. Think LPG is great. Cheap easy to swap between petrol and LPG. Doubles the range.

Out of curiosity, how did you determine cyl 3 is at fault? Did you pull the lead off with it running?

Once you have ruled out plug / lead, check the valve clearances.

Halves the engine life as it burns hotter, sounds like you have tuned it really lean with LPG...
Not so cheap really. You have probably burnt out a valve.
I wouldnt risk it without having proper cylinder hed temperature gauges to tell you when you are cooking it on LPG.

The valves and cylinder heads on a T1 engine are partly cooled by deliberately running inefficient and rich and evaporating liquid fuel as a coolant.
If you lean out a petrol fuelled bus you can also up the MPG at the expense of engine life.

  8. It’s a very dry fuel and eats valve guides and runs super hot ...

The older oil bath air cleaners used to help the lubrication of valve guides a little by providing a fine oil mist in the air flow. I always fimd the inside of the intake system is a little oily.
VW almost certaimly went to paper filters to stop HC emissions from that oil spray.
