Regionally, Pikelets are the ones bakers used to make, a dollop of dough on a tray and not a uniformed shape. I think crumpets are thicker because they used moulds. Still pikelets in our family I’ve recently been educating southerners in this very subject.
Having done a few night shifts in a crumpet factory in my youth, I am still not that bothered by them. It's a smell that lingers in the memory, which when you spend 8 hours at a stretch engulfed in the aroma, kinda puts you off them a bit
