Crankcase oil seal

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by karlrennison, Jan 28, 2012.

  1. I believe I need a new crankcase oil seal due to an oil leak from down below where the engine meets the gearbox. Trouble is, I'm doing some ordering on vw heritage and can't seem to find the right one. Can anyone help?? It's for a 1600 twin port.
    Cheers, Karl.

  5. Now I'm confused  crankcase oil seal or flywheel oil seal?
I just thought the first was more expensive with it being a genuine vw part???

  7. I changed oil cooler seals and push rods and seals when I had engine out to replace heads. Engine is coming out so I can paint engine bay, so probably going to change clutch too.......... It's leaked for as long as I can remember to be fair. Usual 'spray' up back of bus when it's been driven, and oil patch under where gearbox/engine meet

  8. i think its the flywheel oil seal your on about mines leaks from there i changed it twice now
i just park nose up on our drive as it got a good slope on it does nt leak half as much lol

Does it have any end float?
Did you polish up the surface on the flywheel?
Did you fit the o-ring in the flywheel?
Did you push the seal right home, or until top flush with case?
did you oil the seal and flywheel seal surface before fitting the flywheel.

You should clean up he surface the seal seals against as shiny as you can, even if it looks good. Hopefully you would find a tiny groove worn into it.
