Couple of questions

  1. On a 78 bay should the suspension arm bottom ball joint have a washer before the lock nut or is it only the top ball joint that has a washer?

And the grub screws with lock nuts that hold the suspension arms to the torsion leaves are they supposed to take an 8.5mm hex key or an 8mm?

  2. washer under nyloc nut onbottom balljoint and 8mm allen key

  3. Thats strange i used an 8mm allen key to remove them but theres still a bit of play and 9mm is too large

Only two washers came off mine does the top balljoint have a washer or is it just the brake pipe bracket then the nylock

The exploded diagrams dont make it all that clear

  4. top balljoint has a washer and brake pipe bracket on it. the grub screws always wide'ns towards the edge think it's when people lean on them without putting the allen key all the way in. i always use a allen key on a socket and hammer it alway in and tighten it with the torque wrench

  5. Seems mines lost a pair of washers at some time in its life then
I take it i can use a washer from the likes of b and q as im not paying the £3.50 per washer vw heritage want

I was going to replace the grub screws and lock nuts but for 6 of each it totals £33 from vwh they sure know how to charge for the little things

Cheers for the replys dude and do you have a link to a decent exploded diagram of the front suspension arms and fitting because all the ones ive looked at dont show the washer or lock nut for the lower arms

  6. get to your local industrial fastner supplier (yell.com) and take a old grub screw and nut, balljoint locknut (if you havent all ready got new one's) and get them to sort the washers to suit. bet b&q wont have m16 or m18 washers and if they do your getting shafted for sure! most fastner places have a £10+vat min cash order for non account customers but that will be your lot for those bits where i go that lot would be £4 on a saturday morning ;)

  7. ... as 13 window delux said - try local industrial fasters outlet. If you are in the West country it's Avery and Knight in Bath. They also have a website that you can buy from.

I got front shocks top bolts from them in a higher spec hi tensile steel for about £1.50 including the nyloc nut. Better and cheaper than VWH.
