cooling question.

    this weekend unfortunately i'm not at rtth, as i said on another post im out all day friday and not back til after 2am sat morning, they wouldn't sell me a one night sleeping pass so i ain't going, i was gonna show my face for the day if the awards were done there as planned but due to site failiure thats been put back.

  4. i'll post a pic and vid next week. I'm in the middle of rebuilding a 1700 and its the first one I've ever seen with all the tinware complete and in place.


    The 2 under head sheet bits of tin actually aid cooling and engine heat up. When you first start the engine the thermostat is closed. It opens and adjusts the flaps as it heats up. With the under cylinder tin missing it takes longer for the thermostat to heat up, therefore the engine is not benefiting from the full cooling effect of the fan as soon as it should. Not such a big deal in our climate but it should also affect how you drive the van - let it get fully up to operating temperature before racing Corsa's at the lights

  10. the only bit I am missing is the exhaust heat deflector. i think i can live without that though

    How powerful is the stock fan?

    The stock Type 4 fan is rated at 800 litres/s (1700 CFM) at 4,600 rpm. It's no Porsche 911 fan but it's still mighty.

    The Type 1 fan is rated 1260 CFM at 4,000 rpm. Consider the fact the Type 1 fan is turning at 1.8x engine speed while the Type 4 fan is turning 1:1 with the crank.

    Type IV engines already have built-in many of the design improvements that rebuilders have to make to the Type I engine (and a lot more):
    • Aluminum case
      • Full flow oil filter (see Type 1 hacks)
        • Larger oil cooler that doesn't block any cylinder
          • Separate oil drain plug
            • Dual relief case with large oil galleries
              • Beefier rocker arms
                • Broken fan belt won't overheat engine
                Larger displacement (40% more torque)
              "Sand seals"
            Hydraulic lifters
          Serviceable push rod tubes and seals
        Elimination of flywheel gland nut
      Hoover approved! :)

    i still can't get my head round - if it's getting hot drop a gear and thrash it lol, more revs = faster fan, faster fan = more cooling, i know it makes sense but it's just against the grain of any other car i've had.
     
  14. As far as heating up when you turn off, I noticed a cool chimneying effect as I have a slight weep on my L/H rocker cover and the smoke when stopped was rushing out the top of the rear vent, all that heat dragging cool air from beneath...brilliant design :D

    so being an auto if i'm going up a big hill i should select 2nd so it don't try and get into 3rd and rev to slow?

  18. Remember Ricky, at tickover the engine is reving at 750rpm, and therfore the fan is reving at 750 rpm. If you increse the revs to 3000rpm then the fan will be rotating at 3000rpm too or 4 times as fast. 4 times as fast= 4X more cooling air
