Coils........ what does it all mean?

  1. Looking to get a new coil for the van, but, in future (hopefully the very near) I am going to upgrade to a 123 distributor.

Looking around at all the specs of coils I cant work out what I need, for a 123 I've been told "You can use any coil you like : stock or high energy : but the primary side of the coil can NOT be below 1 Ohm".

Looking just at the flamethrowers there seem to be a number of different option, ranging from 28,000 volts to 60,000 volts with a resistance of 0.6, 1.5 or 3 ohms. But what does that all mean in real terms? I was going to have a look at a few manufacturers but couldnt work out the best one from one to compare to another.

As I understand it, the higher the voltage the bigger the gap you can have on the spark plug, but again, what does that mean?

A standard Bosch Blue looks to run at about 3.3 ohms.

Anyone running a similar system, what have you got?

    Cheers

  3. A standard Brazilian "blue" Bosch coil will work fine with the 123. Buy a new one - only about £18. You don't need anything fancier.

  4. Cheers guys, thats a few quid saved!
