Hi and thanks for taking the time to check out our new camper van. Ive always had vw camper vans of some description, starting with a 1 owner '72 westy back in the early nineties, followed by a '76 panel van and numerous t4's and now a t5 kombi. But after starting a family My partner and I really wanted to get back to an old 'un! So after looking around for quite a while and getting nowhere (and shocked at the price of bays these days!) we stumbled across a '78 westy not too far away in Swansea at FBI. I bought it straight away and Graham delivered it the next morning.

Our little boy instantly named him Chilli! It needs quite a bit of work, a respray, an interior and a mechanical overhaul. Chilli is also missing its FI 2.0 litre engine! Overall the van is pretty straight and rust free apart from a few little bits here and there...

  3. you can not put a title up like that and provide no evidence of the level of funkyness, the level of green or even how chillin he is!!

So, Chilli needs a rear arch due to a nasty scrape, a rear panel, 2 battery trays, a lower windscreen panel and a new engine lid!
Not too bad I reckon but the budget has gone! Hold on its gonna get expensive!!!

But the guys are well on with it by the time I get back to the coachworks the filler is going on to try and tame those large side panels!!

I also get them to weld up all the westy holes and the side marker light holes too

only the very top of a front panel repair panel is needed...keep as much of that german tin as poss!

I recon there's enough room for the v12!! you don't really need the bed in the back anyway!

Back in the nineties a mate of mine mid mounted a v12 jag and Renault 30 box in a '61 bug! there was minimal room for seats in the front, your face was inches from the 'screen, your back was against the engine, in fact the dash had to be sectioned so you could get clearance for your hands on the steering wheel! he drove it once on the road to test it...im not sure if he made it out of second gear but he proper frightened himself and later broke it for parts!!!

  18. jesus H christ!! that must have been scary! fair play though!
