Changing Starter Motor

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Daithi, Sep 2, 2019.

  1. I took out the starter motor to replace it. I wanted to change the bush that everyone recommends to change so as I couldn't see into the hole I took a photo but I'd like some confirmation that the gold that's bouncing back at me (see photo) isn't a bad thing as I'm slightly worried as I'm not seeing that in any pics I can find online ...

  2. The shiny brass/bronze thing in the pic is your rather beaten-up starter bush.

When you put the new one in be careful not to deform the hole as it is then a problem to get the starter shaft in

  9. I think your bush is about to fall out anyway ;). Screw an M12(?) tap into it, and yank...

Screw the nut onto the starter mounting bolt, put the new bush over that, and use it as a guide/drift to knock the new one in.

And oil it, as that's the only oil it will ever get ...the bush is actually porous will absorb the oil .

Its also made confusing by the thick layer of dirt. Normally you can clearly see the bushing around the hole..

This is good because it means it is not being washed away by a constant spray of oil from a knackered crank seal..
