centre steering pin

  1. when i had the mot last week it failed on the centre steering pin having excessive play and making a knocking noise so he told me to try and pump a load of grease into it to see if it would help . the knocking has stopped and there's not as much play so do you think this will be ok
    cheers craig

  2. keep it greased up and as long as to play doesnt come back leave it at that! might not have been greased for 30 years!!!! front axle should be greased every 3000 miles.
on my split there is a little play in king pins i grease them up as soon as the van goes back on the road every year and it sails through the test grease takes up the gap between bushes

  3. ...or you could fix it, of course :). Then you'd be able to steer in a straight line...

  6. It may pass the mot but if the top bush is worn then it wont be long before its pushed the grease out and gone sloppy again

Steering pin overhaul kits are available for £25 and contain everything you need

Ive seen the mount where the steering pin fits ripped clean off the beam before due to lack of regular greasing

  9. Scary, but possible - you really do want to keep the pin well-greased! If you think of the leverage on it, any dodgy welds on a rusty beam could come undone while you're heaving on the wheel...

  10. Creative Engineering do a centre pin kit for £19.

On my to do list as I got an MOT advisory last time around.

  11. the centre pin bushes on a bay just need to be pushed in and they dont need to be reamed out like they do on a split so no biggy either

  12. There is a fitting tool for around £25 but a carefully sellected socket and extention will do the trick,I also use a valve spring compressor to fit the arm so the bolt does not become burred and the thread stripped. 8)
