Carburettor Replacement Options

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, Aug 16, 2011.

  1. My 1972 van has the 1700 cc type 4 engine and has been fitted with an EMPI Weber copy progressive Carburettor. From what I have read, these copy carbs are not very well rated and looking at the installation, they give a very long inlet manifold pipe to reach both sides of the boxer. The exhaust looks standard.

While the engine is out, I am doing as many jobs as possible (clutch, seals etc.) so that the van will be as reliable as possible once on the road. More power is always nice, but reliability is the key point.

Sould I be looking to replace the carb with a better set up now, or just leave it as it is?

  2. I say it's down to pound notes can't see you having any change out five hundred for some twins

  3. twin solexs are great and work fine when running, bugger when the seals go and they leak.

Speak to Birdy as he bought a pair recently.

I went for the Webber 40 IDFs cost about £500 + Vat etc from eurocarb.

    Sound amazing.

I hear that the single carb struggles in cold conditions.

    Hope that helps.

  5. I never experienced any issue with the progressive on my 1700, but then we don't really experience very cold winters here in the UK...

and I very rarely used the van during the winter anyway. If its not broke don't fix it, unless you want to spend lots of money, in which way pay for a nice set of Dells...
    ;D

I was going to say what Joker said. If it aint broke don't fix it - it you had no trouble I'd stay with what is working.

  7. I ran a single progressive weber 32/36 all last year .

Hot or cold wether I had no problems at all :)

  8. It did start straight off after being in a container for 6 weeks, but then I haven't actually driven it to see what it is like. Tempting as Dellortos / Webers are, I suppose I should wait to get the engine back in and see how it goes.

  10. I changes my leaky pair just after i got my bay and put the webber single on

No problems , bit of a nack to setup but then i am sure they all have a way to be setup

Only have cold start problems if the temp is below 3 degrees c , to cold to be driving it anyway imho 8)

  13. These are what I got from this seller

He will jet them for you. You will need the manifold kit as well, I got the cb kit from stateside tuning.

Easier to fit manifolds with engine out, and fit carbs with engine in.

You will then need to set them up. I got mine done on rolling road.

As above don't expect it to be a cheap process.

You may need to adapt breather pipes and also servo pipe may need to be connected to left hand manifold (if servo is fitted).

When your done, sling your old carbs on eBay to reclaim some of your expenditure.
