  1. Should i get my original twin solex carbs refurbed or by new webbers ?

  2. I overhauled the original twin Solex carbs including the spindle bushes, but was never happy with them. One of the mixture screws kept winding itself out causing a weak mixture on one bank.
Decided to go for the dual weber 34 ict conversation and have been very happy with them.
No chokes on them but a couple of squirts on the pedal & it fires up no problem.
If you decide to go with the Webers, Eurocarb is the place to get them from.

  3. If you've still got all the rest of the gubbins to go with them in decent order.....stock... keeps the cold start easier....

.but webber's look tidy with all that space.....

A loose screw is not necessarily anything to do with the refurb , unless they were swapped over and one became tight and the other became loose because of tolerances. .. originally big screw + big hole one side, small screw + small hole other side. Swapped over and you get small screw in a big hole.

A quick tap with a centre punch just beside the screw in the carb body would have stopped the screw winding out. Or drilling a hole through it and using a wire to stop it turning.

Probably best to start by trying stay stock, and replace bits like bushes yourself at lower cost, so you still have enough money to buy the ICTs.
The cost of paying somebody else a few hours labour to do the refurb makes it a bigger risk.

  5. Was intrigued by the screws being swapped over so maybe not the same size, or one being worn, so I've done what I always do when I want to understand a carb question.

About 20 years ago I was given a pair of Solexes so I can look at these without messing up the bus. I don't know how old they are but they did come off a T4 engine. On mine both mixture screws are the same thread, but one came out much easier than the other. They have a rubber sealing ring on them and one was somewhat perished, so is it possible that this is why your screw kept come loose @DPS DAN ?

  6. Could have been the reason for the screw loosening itself. The carbs themselves were well worn. I am happy with the Weber conversation now though.

  7. Im very new to the vw world so still trying to get my head around different set ups. Do the webbers still require the vacumn dizzy or is this where the 009 comes in ?
Im looking to put accuspeed electronic ignition system in so need to be sure i get the correct set up.

  8. There is a port on the base of the Webers for vacuum for the dizzy or you can leave the blanking plugs on and use a 009 dizzy. Vac advanced dizzys seem to work better as you don’t get the flat spot. I have the Pertronix ign pick up and it works well.

Don’t fit a 009 distributor; they are only of use for a stationary engine. Which Weber carbs are you considering?

They’ll work fine, the hex bar linkage is maybe not the best but it works okay. Use a SVDA distributor.

  12. Only downside I found was with the short manifolds supplied it had a tendency to perculate the fuel in the carbs causing a poor hot start if left for a short while.
Got round it with a couple of the thick insulating gaskets on the carb bases
