Carbs

  1. I am having a bit of trouble setting up my twin solex carbs ,so was considering the idea of fitting a manifold and single carb. Its for a 76 2L automatic .What is the best progressive carb to fit ? Should I do it ?

  2. Don't! Get your Solexes tweaked up.

  3. Progressives are a world of pain, and you've still got a horrible t-shaped manifold.

  4. If your insistent on single progressive you should pick one up for around £50 because they are so Marmitee there is always a load for sale ... delloroto’s not so much

Bet all the vacuum hoses are shaggy.
Unless the throttle body bushes are worn.
    You could regret a progressive..

You can do better with knackered Solexes than a progressive.

Ultrasonic clean. Refurb kit : New fuel metering valves, gaskets etc. Set float level. Check fuel pressure is low enough.

Check throttle plate for wear on spindle and grooves in barrel wall where the throttle plate rubs. Rebush spindle, clean up barrel wall if slightly grooved, adjust throttle plate on spindle .

Make sure throttle linkage opens both sides equally.

If there are hot start issues of fuel boiling : fibre gaskets under carburettors.

So far what I described takes about a day to DIY.

Read the Bentley manual, get a carburettor balancer air flow meter "snail" ... although at Techenders we did quite well balancing by the hissing noises at idle with the air cleaner off and then balancing the "chuff" noise as the throttle opened off idle... we then connected the balancer snail to confirm the balance, and tweaked it.

Or you can pay somebody and it still will be cheaper than properly fitting a progressive.

Your engine lacks features needed to make a centre mount carburettor work well: the T1 already has an exhaust heated inlet manifold. Not needed so not fitted to Solex as they have the opposite hot manifold problem.
The T1 air feed has preheated air which the T4 does have but which you lose when you discard the Solex air cleaner on your T4.

Persist until you prove they are beyond economic repair.. then buy some more secondhand and swap good parts...

Or bring it to Techenders and it can join the lineup of buses needing a tweak, where you can watch somebody doing the same , then you try on your bus with people helping.

You would regret a progressive on an automatic.......dip stick for gearbox is in the way and the throttle linkages will never work properly.
Had one for about 3 years, carb itself ok, apart from the hesitancy when cold, but I had more problems with throttle cable....regularly snapped as pedal was so heavy.
Mine was a 2L with a later auto box.

  8. Looks like I may have a play with the solex's for a while and try and sort them out .Anybody know anyone in the south east that deals with them in case I need help ?

  9. Have a look (I've lost the link) on Itinerant Aircooled. Somewhere on there is a really good guide to setting up the Solexes.
