My daughters boyfriend cleverly drilled into a hidden cable going down to a downstairs plug socket in her house. He did it twice. Doh! Damn those battery drills (and boyfriends).
At the moment we've used sturdy chocolate block to reconnect it but I'm wondering what the cheapest/easiest solution to making a permanent fix which we can then plaster over.
I know the proper solution would be to fit a new cable with a junction box under the floorboards upstairs and failing that getting an electrician in to put special crimps in but I don't think he could legally bury them in the wall but I don't want anything on the wall, I'd like it all hidden.

  2. Youve answered your own question. A leccy would replace it as joints need to be accessible.

  3. as above, cut a square out the ceiling if needs be, fit a joint, id use a maintenance free one rather than a screwed terminal type, and pull in a new section of cable to go down the wall.
cut the square out neatly and then do your joint and fit a piece of batten across the hole and re-fix the section of plasterboard back again and fill. saves taking the floor up if its a pain :)

@Dicky On a scale of 1 to 10 how bad/dangerous would it be if I got a real electrician to come in and put a new wire in going up from the socket all the way to the top damage meaning there's only join. Getting him to put proper real electricians crimps in. Then thank him very much, pay him and tell him we'll sort out the wall?

  6. Last time I got involved in a discussion about electrics with dicky. I was personally abused and for that reason I'm out ;)

(Plus I don't have a clue about sparks)

Is the wiring behind capping? If so, one possibility is chop out at high level cut the capping out very carefully and expose the cable/s tie a new cable onto the damaged cable at the socket and pull it through with the old cable (assuming that it's not blown in half) have someone feed it up from the socket whilst pulling it out of the wall at high level .

If all goes to plan ( it probably won't) you could surface mount a single box and fit a high level single socket ( for future use ;)) and reconnect the existing socket at low level ..not great having an accessory at high level.
Sounds easy and it could be...if not get a sparks in..

No, unfortunately the cable is buried into plaster.

    Ok...

1 = Really Really Terribly Bad and almost certainly going to end in a fatal fire.
2 = Really Really Terribly Bad and almost certainly going to end in a fire although it might not be fatal
3 = Really Really Terribly Bad but might not end up bursting into flames
4 = Only fairly bad and probably won't burn for a few months
5 = Reasonably bad but may not burst into flames for years and years
6 = Sort of OK as long as you don't mind the lights being a bit temperamental
7 = Not too shabby and it'll work but be a constant source of worry for the householder
8 = Actually perfectly safe but strictly against the legal guidelines
9 = perfectly safe but but sails a bit close to the wind legally
10 = Perfectly safe and it's only the overbearing government regulations which are the problem.

Should you choose to reply to this your answer will automatically delete itself as soon as I've read it.

Oh, to recap, the question is "can I safely plaster over a proper electricians crimps?"

  13. Im not quite sure what your proposing there. The joint shouldnt be plastered in. It should be under the floor.above/below. Whichever is appropriate.

The "joint" is where numpty boyfriend drilled through the wire so about 7 or 8 feet above the ground

  15. As per your initial post. You know the answer!

  16. If a qualified tradesperson comes in then the joint will have to be in the void between floors or behind some sort of removable panel.

So the answer is, use a good quality crimp, do the work yourself and plaster the fecking thing in and forget about it. Only you'll know it's there and I'm guessing you ain't gonna be telling anyone soon.

If the gas police/electrical mafia/blood sucking lawyers are reading this then that's my own opinion and I strongly recommend that you don't follow any advice hereby implied. I may have drunk too much fizzy pop.

  17. do not use a through crimp on solid core cable then bury it in the wall

do it properly, cut the cable in the ceiling void above and join on a new section of cable and run it down to the socket/switch.
you maybe able to use the old cable as a draw, maybe not, if not chop the wall out.

do it properly ffs, or get someone in to do it properly
