Can I get V5 without having the vin/engine numbers

  1. This info is with regards to a car I own and nothing dodgy.
I have the number plate but no vin or chassie number.
Bought the car in 1997 and it has sat in storage for years, lost original V5 and I never changed it into my name, as I had no plans to keep it at the time.

Can I get a new V5 with out having the vin number??? Panel with vin number cut out due to damage.

I put detail into DVLA website it came up as the correct car, model/engine size/ colour etc, only info is it was last taxed in '96

  2. Should be fine, just fill in a V62. I'm pretty sure there's nothing legally wrong with cutting out a VIN number, as long as you replace it with the same VIN number (when you get your V5 back, it should have the chassis number on it- get that number stamped into a steel plate and weld it in place) Obviously using another number is a huge no-no.
You MAY also run into trouble with the fact that it's been off the road so long- sometimes the DVLA want to "inspect" the vehicle which means showing them the VIN, which of course you don't know. In that instance I'd go around dealerships with a few beers asking them to do a VIC check and get you the VIN number, or maybe one of the fancier VIC services online will pull it up.

  3. I'd say that's illegal because you can't prove it's the same car. That's how ringers are err, "ringed".
I know this because of a camper I sold then was stolen and had the m plate & Vin cut out. The van was recovered but the new owner couldn't prove it was the same vehicle due to lack of ID and was written off and scrapped (cat d?) Can of worms.

  4. Most if not all vehicles have the chassis number stamped somewhere else on the vehicle besides being on the VIN plate - usually on a chassis cross member somewhere inside the vehicle or in the engine bay. If the VIN plate has been removed then you would have to prove it was the same vehicle by showing other evidence - this can cost money to pay engineer/ club official to verify it. . We had a chap in our MG club who had the same problem - the chassis number was so feint (rusted/worn) that they made him have it restamped before they would issue the V5/registration. If you cannot find it then you might lose the registration and have to have a Q plate.

  5. What vehicle is it?

  6. It's not a VW, (ford) it was bought for the number plate, but with document lost, it maybe time to scrap it if I can't get the V5 been sitting for years and like most rusty cars restoration cost out way the value.
Just wanted to see if I could get the V5 first so I can sell it on for resto for someone else to fix up.

    Thanks for all comments/info

  7. I have this sort of issue with a motorbike - frame has been altered to give more rake at the forks and beefed up in swing arm area - Chassis number almost destroyed by welding at the forks (not by me) and vin plate removed from swing arm area. I have the V5 from the original bike and therefore its original reg no. DVLA refuse to issue a new document and have in fact kept it when the change of ownership happened. I have invoices and photos of the build from its purchase and alteration by the PO and invoices for all parts.

They will only issue a Q plate whatever happens now as they claim the removal of the Chassis No. alters the frame so much that it is a "kit". Have spoken to them and the guy understood my side completely but he stated that policy was, if plates/numbers are removed, it can not be the original vehicle. I'm still not convinced but can only go along with their interpretation!

  8. I was going to try to get the VIN (from dealers) not inform the DVLA it is missing and apply for new V5, hate the thought of a 'Q' plate.
If its too much hassle I won't bother, it's not that valuable, the reg number is worth more than the car, but no good with out V5

Do an hpi check, comes back with engine number chassis number etc , costs £15 from RAC etc, but cheaper if you do it with others
