Calling Auto Gurus!!

  1. I didn't want to start the engine quite yet but my hand was forced while doing the electrics on the van as I turned the key too far. Ah well, now the issue,,,,,,,
Ignition to starter all ok, the starter seems to be turning over but I don't know if it's turning the flywheel in the gearbox housing. Don't think this is happening as I placed a piece of tape on the fan belt to see if it moved and it didn't? So... Is the starter not coming out and turning the flywheel, or, is the flywheel and torque converter not connecting with the drive plate on the rear of the engine? [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow] is I don't know where to start???? I'm just hoping it's nothing serious?? Please let it be an easy fix, got I sound desperate lol!!

  2. If the starter wasn't engaging with the flywheel, it would just make a whizzing electric motor noise.

  3. I'm sure it's more than a whiz zing noise but I don't hear a click when I turn the ignition on that's why I wondered if the starter was engaging?

  4. Gurus, where art thou hiding?

  5. Pretty unlikely the drive plate has has come undone, but you can check via the installation hole which has a black plastic cover and is at 10 o'clock on the bell housing looking into the engine compartment. The drive plate bolts to the torque converter with 3 bolts. The torque converter holds the starter ring .

Presume you can't get a helper to watch. How about rigging up a mirror or even videoing the engine on your phone to see what's happening.

as i said in your pm matey you need to check the starter is 100% ok, is it deffo spinning over? is it just flicking the solenoid out? could be sticking, tap it check all wiring, you can't bump a auto to see if it will start to know if the engine is ok.....

  7. Schoolboy error!! You just said the drive plate bolts to the torque converter!!!!!! Bugger!!!! How do you do that? I wondered how they connected, what a div I am!

  8. God feel really stupid now, or maybe not. Do you bolt them together once the engines in? You must have to surely? Please reply, "yes"
Problem is I can't see without looking til tomoro :(

andy, the bolts can come loose..... mine is likely to have a loose plate it's rattling like a pig, is that view hole under the van or tinware off? i'm told they come loose and cause the plate to fracture but as you say the starter ring should be fine on lardys...

  10. Yeah I've just stuck the engine in, the bus came with no engine in it, so I put an engine in with the drive plate on but didn't know I had to bolt it to the torque converter?

  17. It'll be on the bell housing, I know that there is a gap down the sides but not sure how I'm going to get the bolts in through the slots and onto the two parts? Will probably be obvious tomoro when I'm at the back of the engine looking at the housing?
