I've got a 2L auto but no temp gauge.
My mechanic said my engine ran / runs hot ( no idea how he assessed that ) but dipstick test never shows any reason to be concerned .

  2. For me it seemed to be running fine at home, but it’s pretty flat round here, so it was only when I was driving in hilly country that I realised it was struggling.

The ATF is probably the easiest check, but have a look at the troubleshooting guide if you’ve not already seen this. The stall speed check on p14 looks interesting.

..I used to use this Halfords stuff too..had a same issue with the hot running motor..my vdo gauge shown even similar temps so..I switched to 15/40 and problem was solved however..at the same time I replaced that vdo gauge with another one vdo gauge so that gauge could have been faulty..but changing oil first is probably the quickest/cheapest way to find out if you run too thick oil..

    I did the same
I found with 20/50 oil the pressure reading was just around the the same as the operating pressure of the bypass valve 3.4bar.

  5. I have an auto with oil and cylinder head temp gauges fitted:D. Can't help with numbers though as been off the road for the last 7 years:p

I did vaguely remember that it was running at the top end of what I was comfortable with though, particularly the cylinder head temp. No idea if that was down to auto box, LPG conversion, or just usual for these buses!

If you can wait 6 months or so I'll have Hatty back on the road so can give some actual figures - hopefully even running on petrol which I guess will be even more use to you:)

I know it's a while ago, but hopefully you are now enjoying your van, did you have any temperatures for us ?
I'm curious as mine's a 2L auto and contemplating Switzerland next year.

With the better cooling of the Type4 engine, you really should be in the "not really warming up" zone at under 100C at 55 mph. Not in the "thrashing it to death zone" at 130 degrees C

So something is wrong - possibly an original emissions friendly lean carburettor setup, or the cooling air flaps are missing or not working properly.
On a T1 no flaps means fail safe always cooling . On a T4 it means the cylinder heads are being missed out for cooling.

If its really worrying you could fit a sandwich plate under the oil filter and loop out to an oil cooler for some more cooling.

  8. My Auto bus seems to run fairly cool. That’s probably because I moved the temp sensor to a stud on the head instead of under the spark plug  However even when under number 3 spark plug it rarely went much over 100 C
Apart from when stood after a run when it would climb to 115 C.
Another recommended Auto box repairer is Martin Lowe Automatic Transmissions in Barnsley. Old school and very knowledgeable  Overhauled my box & axle a few years back.

  9. Puttering along at 55-60, my oil temps stay around 210*F. 65 mph on the highway on a hot day it will creep up to 230F which is where I try to keep it. I have never seen higher than 240F.

I have always wondered about the oil pressure VW lists the spec at something like 45 psi @ 3500 rpm/ oil temp 158F.

There is also that old chestnut of 10 psi per 1000 rpm, but at high oil temps on hot days I can’t imagine being on those numbers at say 4000 rpm.

I have also heard that 30 psi at highway speeds is sufficient.

Not to give you more to worry about but I would expect oil pressure to vary a lot more than on a water cooled car.

Just curious as to oil pressure considerations on the other side of the pond. Sorry about the F readings, Celsius only means anything to me for weather because I lived in Canada for a long time. Kilos are for weighing really big things, lbs is for people as are feet and inches. Centimeters and meters are for objects other than people. Anyhoo...

I know that I'm reviving an old thread @andyv have you a contact number for the gearbox company as there seem to be several similar named ones in Huddersfield.

  11. Regret I don't know what I used as it's such a long time ago, but I just looked on line and the company have two branches under the same number, 0800 980 9614, one at Nile St, the other at Blackmoorfoot Road. Their web site address is autogearbox.co.uk but the company is called Automatic Transmissions Huddersfield.
