Brexit Party

  1. not sure it was inevitable but certainly think that an OP usually needs to think about 'where could this go?' and decide on posting from there (always risk assessing!), our tlb melting pot can take surprising turns even when discussing relatively 'safe' stuff - i never realised fuel hose and clips were so hotly debated.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes i'm in just the right mood to poke the bear and await responses with a 'bring it on' attitude :D but other times, not so.

For example, the news coming out of Alabama this week incensed me! ...... but i didn't start a thread on it because at the moment i'm not feeling overly generous to opposing views.

  2. Knob jockey - derivation of knob head or knobber quite innocuous in the north but quite offensive down south apparently. Can be ised as a tterm of abuse ... hard to tell unless you witness the inflection and understand the circumstances. Element of irony when not really emphasised.

Knobber - actually used as a term of mild insult yet endearment. Again, offensive to southerners!

I always listen to other people's views, it is a way of understanding their thinking. This Brexit debate just doesn't work like that for some reason. It's either that person's point or nothing, then it turns into a slanging match.

  5. knob jockey is a derogatory term used to describe gay men. I don’t think there’s a place for homophobic insults on here personally.

  8. I’m not trolling anyone. My son is gay and has to put up with ‘funny’ comments like this all the time.

Well, I've just read this thread from the start and must say that I'm quite disappointed that it doesn't answer that main question which is " what oil should I use"?

  14. Ok! I see your point. Im not homophobic in any way shape or form and i apologise sincerely if that caused offence. I genuinely didnt intend to use it as a homophobic term. Hope thats clear.

  15. Thank you.

Now what about that brexit business eh? what you think? ;)

  16. It's the problem with politics views are typically polarised and there is no middle ground. Even worse by email debate ... he who googles most and types fastest wins.

I know @Barry Haynes has sometimes mentioned his slimness so I wondered if it was a reference to him taking up competitive horse racing...

  19. i think that's probably because we have entered back into the twilight zone of the national front in some areas, and it is emotive, it is divisive and has been used to divide. some have taken it to the point of scrawling swastika's on property and intimidation - i thought we'd already fought that rubbish in the 80's but clearly some were in hiding awaiting the clarion calls from the likes of farage and yaxley-lennon; both of whom surround themselves with thugs for a reason.

That stuff makes me so angry that i would, without hesitation, stand up in defence of someone (the young woman on the train etc) against these pricks and probably get my head kicked in. As far as i'm concerned, anyone who sits back and can do something but does nothing is complicit in these situations.
And it's getting worse and as it gets worse the time comes to pull the splinters from your backside, get off the fence and stop pretending it's not happening.

in my opinion that's why brexit is so divisive - it's been co-opted by the so-called alt right and their dog whistle politics - easy enough to do at a time of political apathy and disillusionment.
The dog whistlers are not in it 'for the people' they're not fighting for 'the common man', only for themselves. Look who's bankrolling them - banks, farage, johnson, gove et al all have buyers lined up to sell off as much as they can - uk for sale. they're just the spivs, but it pays. Brexit is the perfect vehicle for them.

That's not to say that everyone who supports brexit supports the thug/fascist politics, but everyone who doesn't support brexit opposes those politics. Therein lies the rub.

Did i say i was carefully choosing my battles at the moment? oh well - i don't think it will come as a surprise to any of you on here where my politics sit - a 'bleeding heart', 'virtue signalling' 'snowflake','loony leftie' ... apparently :)

In the words of one of the greats 'tramp the dirt down'! oops, sorry i mean 'what's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?'.

  20. It’s tough as there’s plenty not to like about the EU. But plenty more to loathe and fear about the Brexit and UKIP parties’ organ grinders.
