Just when I thought I was on the last bit of welding before painting the underside! Plate made ready to weld in: But when I hoovered all the Marmitee out of the sill I knocked off some of the lumps of filler that I didn't know we're there: So now I have holes in my sill: I've ordered the sill panel that @davidoft has for sale but I'm loathe to start that job. There's also a hole just above the jacking point that I don't think matters much but can probably block . Should I do the sill now or should I wait and get the bus going first. There are 2 or 3 rust bubbles elsewhere that need to be done too ( bottom corners of sliding door for instance ). Slightly worried that if I Dynax inside the sill channel that this will be a bit of a fire hazard when I come to welding the sill. Also wondering how you go about welding the top edge of the lower sill when attaching it. Will I ever get to drive this bus?
If that was me, I would get the panel replaced now before you do any painting or Dynaz treating..its winter so you might as well make the most of these dark nights & get the job ticked off the list!
I know, you're right. I suppose I was looking for a magic wand. It gets a bit soul destroying every time I take 2 steps forward I seem to go back another.
Wouldn’t worry too much about cavity wax being a fire hazard if you do welding at a later date, it’s rarely flammable enough to really get going, but having an air line/ air compressor to hand is a good precaution, allowing you to extinguish any flames.
Hmmm that's 1-1 then. I've locked the garage now and will ponder. I can't get back to it for a fortnight now.
It'll do your enthusiasm no end of good. Trundling along the road, you'll remember why you have a van. Can always come back to it.
be prepared when you start you l find more . paint new panels a couple of days before you use them , then all areas will be pretected , then you can blast more paint in using a stone chip gun , or just use thinned out stone chip , then when dry wax oil
I know but the welder is out, I'll only brush paint in rustoleum (got a tin of matching yellow) and what's another day's delay - yes I'm slow!
Do you mean paint them before welding? Surely that'll just get burnt off - the sill is only a couple of inches wide and needs welding both sides.
oh yes paint in advance , then clean the area that is to be welded , its easy to paint before it goes on you l not get paint in as easy when all welded up
OK gotcha. In fact once I've cut the lower sill off I can paint the areas behind. I've bought half a dozen cans of Wurth stonechip, mainly for the wheel arches, so got plenty. Thanks for the tip.
all panels pre painted before assembly then when welded spary in some slightly thinned stone chipp also seam seal all welded panels
