Best place to buy chassis repair section?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mattw, Nov 24, 2017.

  1. Whilst changing my front spindles I got carried away with my screwdriver on the beam and chassis and found the below big hole! The beam is no problem as i have a new weed eater but I need to repair the chassis.

Seeing as it’s Black Friday, now could be a good time to buy so where would be best for this particular part?

  2. Image isn't loading, but it depends on the state of the corrosion. From what you've described I'd say that areae is largely flat with 90 degree corners, so I'd just make new panels from flat steel. Cheaper than buying a repair panel, and you don't have to buy into all of this black friday nonsense ;-)

Ah Schofields do repair panels, pretty cheap too, but if it’s the curved bit around the beam I’m not aware of anyone making that part

  4. Thanks guys, it’s mostly flat from what I can see although I haven’t cleaned up the whole area yet. It runs along parallel to the brake master cylinder and looks to be where one of the beam bolts fixes to.

I think I need to drop the beam and clean it up to get an idea of the amount of work involved.

What thickness Steel sheet would i need for chassis repair?

    2-2.5 mm

  6. 2-2.5 is probably right given your master cylinder reference, but get a pair of adjustable spanners and clamp them down on the edge when you cut the rot out. Pull 'em out and measure... That's the thickness- there are some areas which are double skinned.
